Michelle Yeoh Becomes the First Southeast Asian Actress to Win an Oscar For Best Actress

Michelle Yeoh has just become the first Southeast Asian actress to win an Oscar for Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards. 

Michelle Yeoh's stellar performance as Evelyn Wong in Everything Everywhere All at Once has won her countless accolades since Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered in March 2022. Prior to her Oscars win, Yeoh won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Everything Everywhere All at Once. 

Michelle Yeoh is both the first Southeast Asian to win Best Actress and the first Malaysian to win an Oscar in any category. 

Yeoh was born and raised in Malaysia to a Malaysian-Chinese family and began her acting career in Hong Kong as a martial artist and action star. In the three decades of her career, she's starred in iconic films like Police Story 3: Supercop, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
