FIRST LOOK: Netflix Unveils Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder's Epic Space Opera
Netflix’s first epic space opera is here, and Zack Snyder is commandeering the ship. We got our first real look at Rebel Moon in Netflix’s 2023 announcement video, and from what little we saw, we’re already stoked.
Netflix has dropped countless sci-fi shows and movies over the years, but Rebel Moon will be its biggest one yet. Details are scarce, but so far, we know the movie will take place in a corrupt galaxy where a peaceful colony will fight to preserve its freedom. Sofia Boutella plays the lead role of Kora, a mysterious young woman tasked with gathering warriors from different planets to take on the galaxy’s tyrannical regent.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is. Rebel Moon was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s movies—and Star Wars. Sometime in the late 2000s, the movie was initially pitched to Lucasfilm as a potential Star Wars spin-off, but then Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney. The project was already more mature and adult in nature, so the movie was redeveloped by Snyder and producer Eric Newman. A few years later, it found a home at Netflix.
Rebel Moon is looking to be Netflix’s answer to Warner Bros.’ Dune and Apple TV+’s Foundation, and Snyder himself is hoping that the film will expand into valuable IP in the future.
Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, and Michiel Huisman. The film will be the first of two, and Part 1 will drop on Netflix on December 22, 2023.
