Why Regé-Jean Page Declined Bridgerton's $50,000 Per Episode Offer to Return for Season 2

It's clearly not about the money.

Behind Regé-Jean Page’s headline-making decision to depart Bridgerton is actually an astute career move as the actor shifts his focus toward developing his film career. In fact, Page is so intent on growing as an actor that he declined Bridgerton’s offer to pay him $50,000 per episode. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Page was requested to star in three to five episodes in season two, which would have bumped up his earnings from that season to $250,000 just for a supporting role.

But Page declined the offer to reprise his role as fan-favorite Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, in Netflix’s biggest show. According to THR, there were a number of reasons, namely the fact that he was initially drawn to the character believing that Simon would have a one-season arc.

Aside from that, Page reportedly only had a one-year deal with Bridgerton. Of course, no one expected just how big Bridgerton would get. But the door is still open for Page to return in the following seasons, of which Netflix has eight planned.

With the massive commercial success of the show, Page has reportedly been swamped with film offers from Hollywood studios. And he’d be a fool to pass them up.

His next big project is also with Netflix, this time with the legendary Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe, who will direct the upcoming action film The Gray Man. Page’s co-stars include Hollywood heavyweights Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, and Ana de Armas.

Page is also signed on to star in Paramount’s next big blockbuster Dungeons and Dragons, where Page will star opposite other big names, such as Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith.

It’s clear life after Bridgerton is going well for the burgeoning actor, whose upcoming projects reflect his intentions of being a major film star. And who can blame him? With a Russo brothers film in the works and a fantasy blockbuster in production, it’s clear Page’s career is one to watch—with or without Bridgerton.
