Succession Season Four May Be The Show's Last
After three full seasons of HBO’s Succession, we are now closer than ever before to answering the question at the heart of the series: which child will succeed Logan Roy on the throne to his media empire?
The answer, as of right now, is none of them. After Logan changed the terms of his divorce agreement in order to override the desires of his own children in the December 12 season finale, it doesn’t appear that anything will stand in his way of doing what he wants with his company when we see each other again next year. But after a season of bitter sibling rivalries, it was quite nice to see Kendall, Shiv, and Roman all on the same team again, even if they’re getting screwed out of the company in the process. Perhaps this will be a turning point in which the Roy children finally decide to stop fighting about who will take over and just be rich instead? Probably not.
Instead, we can speculate about how they will fight to retain their power, what Alexander Skarsgård’s takeover would look like, and what that sneaky Tom’s role is in all this. (Because we all know Tom is working overtime behind-the-scenes with his own, and Greg’s, interests in mind. Get your bag, Tom! And stay out of jail!)
As far as Season Four goes, HBO has not yet set a date for Succession’s return, though HBO greenlit the next run of episodes in October. "With each season of Succession, Jesse Armstrong has continued to surpass our wildest expectations, pulling us deeper into the Roy family’s inner sanctum with indelible wit, humanity, and precision," HBO’s executive vice president of programming Francesca Orsi said in a statement about the show’s renewal. "This season is undoubtedly no exception, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that’s in store in this next season ahead." They have not, however, begun filming yet, so even a trailer is a long way off at this point.
The fourth season may very well be the show’s last, though. “I think the maximum would be five seasons but possibly more like four,” writer Georgia Pritchett told The Sunday Times in June 2021. “At this point [Armstrong] is saying only one more [season]. But that happens every time. We’ve got a good end in sight.”
Will Connor become President? Will Shiv and Tom have a baby? Will Greg become the next Prince of Luxembourg? We’ll keep you posted on any updates as we hear them. Until then, Sunday nights will just be dark and cold.
