According to Suicide Squad Director, the Ayer Cut Will Eventually Be Released
If the Snyder Cut was possible, then so is the Ayer Cut. Every DC fan knows the story of Suicide Squad. With director David Ayer at the helm, Suicide Squad had a promising start and all the potential to be a critically-acclaimed DC hit. Then the studio release came out and all that potential went to shit.

Suicide Squad (2016) has been the butt of every DC joke since, regardless of how far the studio release was from the original version. In many ways, DC fans deserve the Ayer Cut just as much as the Snyder Cut. And it looks like James Gunn, now the co-head of DC Films, agrees.
In a sober tweet, director David Ayer revealed that James Gunn told him that Suicide Squad: The Ayer Cut “would have its time to be shared.”
This all but confirms that the director’s cut of Suicide Squad will finally see the light of day, and perhaps even give justice to the actors who starred in it, such as Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Headshot, and Viola Davis as Amanda Walker.
Ayer made the comment in response to a tweet that ridiculed Suicide Squad for the nth time:
“What’s your advice on how to navigate this situation with grace? There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people. And I’m aware of there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film. Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn discussion to the 2016 film in a negative way. Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything? I have.”
Over the years, Ayer has stood by the belief that Suicide Squad was “ripped to pieces.” Yesterday, he claimed that “my unseen film plays much better than the studio release.”
As for James Gunn, Ayer tweeted, “He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.” Although this seems to contradict the prospect of releasing the director’s cut of one of the most dramatic productions of the DCEU.
Still, the Ayer Cut could very well be an avenue to close the old chapter of the DC universe and usher in a new one. All eyes are on James Gunn and Peter Safran as they take the DCU into a new era—and deal with the baggage of a bygone era.
Drama aside, we wouldn’t mind seeing the Ayer Cut. But the real question is, is there really that much a demand for it as Ayer claims? There’s no doubt that fans deserved better than what was released in 2016, but after seven years, it begs the question of whether anyone would be willing to watch it anyway. Not unless Ayer fans launch a ballistic campaign the same way the Snyder fans did. Then all bets are off.
