Revolutionary App Empowers Farmers to Protect Their Crops

Farming in the Philippines has always been a high-stakes gamble. With unpredictable weather, pest outbreaks, and rising costs, many farmers struggle just to break even. One young innovator, Aldrin Sojourner “Soj” Gamayon, is determined to change that. His AI-powered app, AgriConnect, aims to give farmers real-time insights to manage risk, boost crop yields, and take control of their farms.

Soj, a 22-year-old Communications Technology Management student from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), made history as the first Filipino to win the Red Bull Basement World Championship last December 2024. His groundbreaking app beat over 110,000 other entries worldwide. Now, as his prize, he is preparing to take his innovation even further with an all-expenses-paid, three-week immersion in Silicon Valley in California, United States.

From Firsthand Perspective to Global Innovation

The inventor’s connection to agriculture is deeply personal—something a lot of inventors could relate to. After all, as the famous proverb goes, necessity is the mother of invention. And putting much importance in finding solutions to problems often roots from experiencing the problem yourself or witnessing it and having that empathy drive you towards a fix.

For Soj, his biggest inspiration is his uncle, a rice farmer in Ilocos Norte. He shares with Esquire Philippines, “My uncle has been farming for years, and I’ve seen firsthand the constant uncertainty that comes with it. One bad season, one pest outbreak—everything hangs in the balance. He once told me how farmers mix different pesticides, just hoping something works—wasting money, damaging their crops, and still losing yields. That moment stuck with me.”

This struggle, echoed by so many Filipino farmers, pushed him to find a solution. His experiences abroad, particularly an internship in Singapore, opened his eyes to how technology could provide clarity where guesswork once ruled.

“Singapore’s startup ecosystem showed me what’s possible when [technology] is built with a clear problem in mind. I worked with a startup helping prawn farmers manage disease risks, and it opened my eyes to how precision changes everything,” Soj says. “It’s not just about throwing more solutions at a problem—it’s about making the right decisions at the right time.”

He adds, “Farming shouldn’t be a gamble, and I wanted to build something that made it feel less like one.”

Rather than overwhelming farmers with complex graphs, data, and fancy terminology, AgriConnect simplifies everything with a system that functions a lot like a traffic light.

What is AgriConnect?

At its core, AgriConnect is an AI-powered risk management tool for farmers. The app collects real-time data on three key factors affecting crops and their risks—water levels, soil moisture, and pest activity. Rather than overwhelming farmers with complex graphs, data, and fancy terminology, AgriConnect simplifies everything with a system that functions a lot like a traffic light:

If “Green,” it’s all systems go and conditions are stable. “Yellow,” on the other hand, means risks are rising and they should keep an eye out on the crops. “Red,” however, translates to “act now before it’s too late.”

“Farmers don’t need complicated dashboards—they need clarity,” Soj stresses. “AgriConnect works like a traffic light system. The AI tracks the biggest threats to their crops and translates that into simple, actionable alerts. It’s like giving farmers a heads-up so they’re never caught off-guard.”

Road to Winning Red Bull Basement

While Soj’s journey to winning the 2024 Red Bull Basement World Final started with a simple idea, he immediately jumped into conducting rigorous research and development. First, he interviewed over 80 Filipino farmers to ensure AgriConnect addressed real-world problems.

“One farmer told me, ‘Hindi namin kailangan ang komplikado. Kailangan naming malaman kung tatagal ba ang mga tanim naming sa buong planting season,'" Soj recalls. “That changed everything. Farmers aren’t looking for more numbers—they’re looking for better decisions.”

Competing against 39 of the best innovators from a pool of 110,000 entries from 40 countries, Soj found himself being the only Asian in the Top 10. Needless to say, it was a daunting experience for the young visionary who confesses he had no idea what a startup pitch was six months before the Red Bull Finals in Tokyo, Japan. During the finals, the top 10 finalists had two minutes to pitch their ideas to the panel composed of Microsoft for Startups Head Hans Yang, Plug and Play investor Letizia Royo-Villanova, influential business mentor Jun Yuh, “AMD Meet the Experts” host and producer Ryane Sagare, and Red Bull athlete and entrepreneur Molly Carlson.

When he was announced as the winner, “I was shaking, my mind racing with a million thoughts at once.” For Soj, it was a certifiable “pinch me” moment.

But that’s not the key takeaway he took home with him after the championship. “More than [proving my idea mattered], it was proof that my goal of building something bigger than myself was becoming real," Soj muses. "This mission was never just about me. The biggest lesson? People don’t invest in ideas; they invest in execution. You have to prove you can make it work.”

Challenge of Bringing AI to Agriculture

While the idea behind AgriConnect is powerful, developing a real-world solution hasn’t been easy. Soj had to bridge the gap between high-tech AI and the realities of farming in the Philippines—and there couldn’t be two worlds more apart than those.

Soj stresses that he wanted to make sure AgriConnect isn’t another theoretical fix that sounds good on paper, but doesn’t end up helping target stakeholders in the end. With this, he emphasizes the importance of listening to stakeholders.

“Everything—from the traffic light system to the way insights are presented—was shaped by what the farmers actually need,” he adds.

Securing partnerships has been another major hurdle. But as AgriConnect continues to gain traction, especially with the global exposure and validation from the world’s greatest minds, potential collaborations are already in the works. Soj reveals that they’re refining the product with early adopters and locking in partnerships with relevant government agencies (such as the Department of Agriculture and Department of Science and Technology), as well as agribusinesses and cooperatives within the Philippines.

“The goal is to get [AgriConnect] into real fields, solving real problems. From there, we scale—first across the Philippines, then globally,” Soj shares.

What’s Next for Soj and AgriConnect?

As the Red Bull Basement World Champion, Soj is now gearing up for his trip to the United States. In the Red Bull Basement article on Soj, they reveal that his prize is a “three-week, all-expenses-paid trip to California, USA, for an immersive program offering resources, networking, and mentorship with tech and venture capital leaders in the technology hub of Silicon Valley.”

Soj, for one, cannot wait, “Silicon Valley is where the best tech startups in the world are built—and Plug and Play is at the heart of it. As one of the top accelerators globally, they’ve helped scale companies like Dropbox, PayPal, and Rappi. With this incentive as the Red Bull Basement winner, it’s my opportunity to tap into Plug and Play’s world-class network of investors, corporate partners, and mentors.”

But beyond Silicon Valley, his vision remains rooted in helping Filipino farmers. He adds, “I want to push AgriConnect beyond just being a great concept—to make it a high-impact, scalable solution for the entire agricultural value chain. The goal is to refine the AI, secure funding, and build global partnerships that take us beyond rice farming.”
More specifically, Soj’s goal is to cut annual farm production losses by at least 30 percent and empower farmers with technology that lets them thrive, not just survive.
