For the Third Straight Year, Philippines Tops Worldwide Rankings for Web3 Gaming Interest

Much like those in South Asia and East Asia, countries in Southeast Asia have emerged as the most productive region for web3. And with the region becoming a key market for web3 gaming, Southeast Asia has gone on to dominate global rankings in the space in the past few years. In 2021 alone, five countries from the region were among the top 15 in the world for Web3 gaming. That includes the Philippines, a country that has had the strongest interest in GameFi not just in the region, but also in the world.

According to numbers compiled by independent cryptocurrency data aggregator
CoinGecko, the Philippines led a pool that consisted of other countries like Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, and the United Arab Emirates. All these nations have maintained their standing in web3 gaming-related search items. In the Philippines' case, it has done so for three consecutive years.

The aggregator also pointed out that the Philippines saw a drop in its web3 gaming interest in 2023. This is partly because of the skepticism after the local play-to-learn landscape changed with the decline in popularity of games like Axie Infinity.

Nevertheless, it's likely web3 is here to stay. Just last November 2022, the Philippine Web3 Festival was held at Bonifacio Global City, a conference dedicated to all things web3 in the country, including games, guilds, NFT projects, and crypto VCs. This was the first time global web3 leaders came together here.

Countries in the study were ranked by Total Search Score. CoinGecko assessed relative search popularity by location, obtaining its figures from Google Trends data. Seven English search terms related to web3 gaming, which comprised of play-to-earn, P2E, GameFi, play-and-earn, blockchain game, crypto game, and NFT game, were tracked and compared across various areas around the world. The study, however, did note some regions' most used search engines may not involve Google.
