Study Shows Gamers Can Burn 200 Calories in an Hour of Gameplay

For professional gamers maybe.

Gaming isn't only fun but it can be good for us in other ways than previously thought. Physically, for one. A new study says gamers burn the same amount of calories as doing 1,000 sit-ups which if you've done a sit-up before could be pretty unbelievable.

The study was conducted by esports platform Stakester. So, it's no wonder that it's focused on the benefits of gaming. Researchers found that gamers, male gamers to be exact, can burn up to 420 calories just by playing for two hours. 

Participants' heart rate and calorie burn were tracked while they played FIFA and Warzone to come up with the study's results. 

"We all know that competition increases our heart rate and most of us have experienced the 'gaming sweat' that happens when you're searching for a last-minute goal in FIFA or in a tight spot in Warzone," said Tom Fairey, CEO and founder of Stakester.

"It's no surprise that this burns calories, but we were surprised to see just how many is burned during a two-hour session, it certainly beats doing 1,000 sit-ups," he added.

Before you begin thinking that gaming is better than sit-ups, however, remember that further studies are needed to make sure the findings are reliable. Also, this only applies to intense gaming sessions like the ones professional gamers have.
