What Filipinos Really Want for Valentine's Day

Love is in the air, and it seems to be bringing with it the sweet scent of... cash?

According to the National Social Weather Survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations  (SWS) from December 8-11, 2023, Filipinos are trading in the traditional roses and chocolates for wishes that hit closer to the wallet.

Among the 1,200 Filipino adults aged 18 and above surveyed all over the country, 16 percent express a preference for cash over other presents. Closely following this practical wish are desires for love and companionship (11 percent), flowers (10 percent), and stylish apparel (9 percent).

Five percent of the respondents highly appreciate any gift that comes from the heart. Others favor mobile phones (5 percent), watches and jewelry (5 percent), and value good family relationships (5 percent).

A small minority prefers food and grocery items, chocolates, the health of loved ones, motorcycles and other vehicles, appliances, a greeting (card or personal), a kiss, a child, a date or dinner, a house, cake, a stuffed toy, an alcoholic drink, perfume, and cosmetics.

More men prefer apparel and heartfelt gifts, while more women desired money and flowers. However, both genders equally valued love and companionship.

Fifty-eight percent of Filipinos reported being very happy with their love life, while 23% felt they could be happier, and 19% reported having no love life. This level of satisfaction is the highest since the record peak of 59% in 2011.
