Boxer Aira Villegas Secures Bronze in Olympic Debut
Filipina boxer Aira Villegas concludes her journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a bronze medal in the women’s 50kg boxing category. Competing at the iconic Stade Roland Garros, Villegas faced the formidable Türkiye’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu, the second seed, in the semifinals. Despite putting up an impressive fight, Villegas was unable to secure a spot in the gold medal match.
Cakiroglu, a silver medalist from Tokyo 2020, was a strong adversary from the start. The Turkish boxer’s pinpoint precision and raw power were evident as she dominated the first round, with all judges scoring in her favor. Villegas struggled to close the distance and land effective punches, leading to a very narrow loss in the opening round. Villegas' spirit remained unbroken and she continued to fight with all she had.

In the second round, Villegas surprised everyone with a stunning knockdown. Utilizing a right straight with just a minute left, she managed to sway the tide against the 28-year-old Cakiroglu. The round concluded without Villegas securing a definitive lead, and the evenly contested third round further complicated her chances. Cakiroglu's experience and composure in the ring ultimately prevailed, as she managed to stay on top and secure the victory by unanimous decision.
As the second Filipino to reach the podium at the Paris 2024 Olympics, she joins gymnast Carlos Yulo, who claimed two gold medals in artistic gymnastics. The boxer's Olympic debut will be remembered as a pivotal point in her career, setting the stage for future successes and potentially more Olympic appearances.
The 29-year-old Villegas will receive a cash incentive of P2 million from the government via the Republic Act 10699, also known as the Athletes and Coaches Incentives Act.
Meanwhile, Buse Naz Cakiroglu advances to the women’s 50kg gold-medal match, scheduled for Friday, August 9. She will compete against Wu Yu of the People’s Republic of China, aiming to win Türkiye’s first gold medal of Paris 2024 and their fourth medal overall. Cakiroglu's journey to the final underscores her status as a top-tier athlete and a formidable opponent in the boxing world.
