Singapore's Changi Airport has again been voted the best airport in the world by the users of airport and airline review platform Skytrax. It’s a title the country’s major airport has held since 2013.

“To be voted the World’s Best Airport for the seventh consecutive year is a truly fabulous achievement for Changi Airport, and this award continues to underline the airport’s popularity with international air travelers,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax. “Changi Airport is very focused on continually improving the customer’s airport experience and innovating with new product and service features.”

Changi Airport leads a top 10 dominated by Asian transportation hubs—seven of the world’s 10 best airports are located in Asian countries. Three major airports from European countries make up the rest of the top 10.

Ranking second is Haneda Airport, one of three Japanese airports included in the top 10. It overtakes Incheon International Airport in South Korea, the runner-up last year, which now ranks number three. Completing the all-Asian top five are Hamad International Airport in Qatar and Hong Kong International Airport, ranking fourth and fifth respectively.

The two other Asian airports that made the top 10 are both found in Japan: Chubu Centrair International Airport in Nagoya and the Narita International Airport. The three European airports that complete the top 10 are the Munich Airport in Germany, London Heathrow Airport in United Kingdom, and Zurich Airport in Switzerland.

How about the Philippines?

Since 2012, Skytrax has published a user-voted list of the top 100 airports in the world, which users select from over 500 choices. And not one of the Philippines’ major airports has ever made the list.

It’s a glaring omission, as many of the major international airports in the region can be found in the top 100. Aside from Singapore’s Changi Airport, other Southeast Asian airports that made the list this year are Indonesia’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (No. 40), Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (No. 46), Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport (No. 54), and Vietnam’s Noi Bai International Airport (No. 86).

But the Philippines will soon have a bigger chance to make it to the top 100 with various airport projects having been recently completed and many more in the pipeline.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport opened its attention-grabbing second terminal last year, while the Bohol-Panglao airport, which is dubbed as the country’s “first eco-airport,” also started operations before 2018 ended.

There are also various ongoing projects that involve the creation and/or renovation of international hubs around the country such as the Clark International Airport, the Bulacan International Airport, and, of course, the rehabilitation plans for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
