The Return of Trump on Twitter? It Could Happen, According to Elon Musk

Is this a comeback?

By now, most of the digital world is aware that Elon Musk will soon own all of Twitter. The space billionaire has plenty of plans for Twitter’s future, from a potential edit button to a subscription service for official accounts. But one of his first acts as majority shareholder will no doubt shock everyone—Musk could soon overturn Twitter’s permanent ban on Donald Trump.

That’s right—the notoriously Twitter-banned former president Donald Trump could be making a comeback within the year.

In a financial web conference covered by the Wall Street Journal, Musk made his opinion clear. Musk, who shelled out $44 billion to buy Twitter, called Twitter’s decision to ban Trump “flat-out wrong” and a “morally bad decision.”

“I think that was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the county and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice,” said the Tesla and SpaceX boss.

Trump was permanently banned from Twitter on January 8 following the events of the 2021 U.S. Capitol attack which his supporters instigated. After Twitter banned Trump, YouTube and Facebook followed suit. In response, Trump formed his own Twitter-like company called Truth Social, which he said claims to be “free” from bias.

After news of Musk’s Twitter acquisition, Trump said he would still not return to Twitter.

Twitter has long been the stomping ground for debates on free speech in the modern world. Based on his outlook, Musk will be taking an absolutist approach to this issue as he stands against “censorship that goes far beyond the law.”

In short:

So what does Musk plan to do about Trump and banned users like him? Here’s what he had to say: “If there are tweets that are wrong and bad, those should be either deleted or made invisible, and a suspension—a temporary suspension—is appropriate, but not a permanent ban.”

There are still a few more months left before Musk and the Twitter board close the deal. But once they do, don’t be surprised if you see the return of Trump on Twitter.
