This Battery Factory in Tarlac Can Power 18,000 EVs Annually
A seven billion peso battery manufacturing plant was recently inaugurated by President Bongbong Marcos, Jr. in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac. The StB Giga Factory, the president said, is the country's first manufacturing plant of advanced lithium iron phosphate batteries, and considers it "a major investment in a very critical industry."
The factory, which will start its commercial operations next month, is set to generate two gigawatt-hours of batteries annually, potentially supplying energy to about 18,000 electric vehicles and close to 500,000 residential battery systems.
How LFP Battery Can Drive the Growth of EVs
Also called LiFePO 4 battery or LFP battery, lithium iron phosphate batteries are less prone to overheating, which makes them ideal for automotive applications. They also have a long lifespan.
According to Forbes, LFP batteries are widely used in China's electric vehicles, and they are now beginning to enter the North American market.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the market size for EVs has grown significantly. The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) told Business World last April that there were a total of 15,300 EV units, 354 electric motorcycles, and 88 electric buses in the country at that time.
EVAP predicted that EV numbers will rise to 6.6 million by 2030. Ferdinand Raquelsantos, EVAP's chairman emeritus said the target this includes 3.6 million electric motorcycles and 300,000 private electric cars.

Role of LFP Batteries in Renewable Energy Initiatives
In addition to its application in EVs, LFP batteries are also used in solar and wind energy storage systems because they offer efficient energy retention and can handle the demands of fluctuating power supply.
While not as energy-dense as some other lithium-ion batteries, LFP batteries are utilized in portable electronics that require stable and reliable power sources, such as power banks and portable speakers.
With the rise of home solar panels, LFP batteries are also becoming popular for residential energy storage solutions, allowing homeowners to store excess solar energy for use when the sun isn't shining.
Through StB Giga Factory, the Philippines can poise itself as a key player in clean energy storage in Southeast Asia.
“This facility runs in tandem with the Philippines’ renewable energy landscape, as we transition our country to renewable energy. Your products could help entice more investors in renewable energy facilities in the country,” President Marcos said during the factory's inauguration.
He likewise expressed enthusiasm about the future of the electric vehicle industry in the country. "We also welcome StB Giga’s plan to enter the EV product market in the coming years. This aligns with our plans to develop the country’s EV industry and produce locally-made EVs and EV components, reducing our reliance on imported fuels," he remarked.
The President highlighted the importance of prioritizing renewable energy sources and EVs, which were previously seen as options, to reduce the impacts of climate change.
