Cebu City Beats Q.C. With Highest Number of COVID-19 Cases
Cebu City logged a total of 1,571 COVID-19 cases, overtaking Quezon City's 1,558 as of the last count. The Queen City of the South has recorded only 12 deaths so far.
Most Cebu victims are centered on hotspot Barangay Mambaling, with 601, while the rest of the cases are staggered throughout other areas. According to Cebu Daily News, the rise in numbers is due to the city's massive testing efforts. As of press time, Cebu has conducted over 10,300 tests.
Earlier, on May 9, hundreds of Cebuano inmates have also tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Even prior to the pandemic, Cebu has had an issue with overcrowded jails.
Officials, however, are not alarmed by the volume of COVID-19 in Cebu. Vivencio Dizon, deputy chief implementer of the government’s coronavirus response, said that Cebu has the lowest death rate (0.75 percent) in the country. The entire island has a total of 21 deaths. The City of Manila, which has the highest death rate, comes at 8.28%, with 69 deaths.
