The Philippines Is One of the Angriest and Saddest Countries in the World, Says This Report

Have you been feeling angry and sad lately? Hey, it's a lot more common than we might realize. Unfortunately, a lot of Filipinos may also be experiencing the same thing. Based on a report by global analytic firm Gallup, the Philippines is one of the angriest and saddest countries in the world.

The Gallup Global Emotions Report measures various countries' emotional state. Its objective is to check on “the world’s emotional temperature." The results are based on "nationally representative, probability-based samples among the adult population."

Included in the emotions surveyed are anger, sadness, stress, worry, pain, enjoyment. The research also assessed countries' rest, smile, and respect meters. Respondents had been asked to answer either "yes," "no," or “don’t know or refused to answer.”

So where do we stand exactly? In its report, Gallup had the Philippines at the 23rd and 21st spots in the anger and sadness categories. It is the second angriest and saddest nation in Southeast Asia, as well.

Anger

In the Philippines, 27 percent of respondents said "yes" while 73 percent said "no." We come in second only to Lao People's Democratic Republic, where 29 percent of participants affirmed their anger, in this regard. For comparison, only 20 percent of participants in other Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar said "yes."

As for the worldwide rankings, Lebanon took the top spot in this group, with 49 percent of respondents saying "yes." It is followed by Turkey at 48 percent, Iraq and Armenia at 46 percent, and Afghanistan at 41 percent.

Sadness

The Philippines also happens to be the second-saddest place in Southeast Asia, only trailing Cambodia, according to the report. Thirty-five percent of respondents from the Philippines and 42 percent of participants in Cambodia said "yes." Vietnam is in the third spot with 27 percent of individuals saying "yes." Interestingly, Singapore is the least angry and sad country in the region.

Meanwhile, Gallup's report shows that Afghanistan leads all countries with a 61-percent "yes" rating in the sadness category. Rounding out the top five are Lebanon with 56 percent, Turkey with 49 percent, Guinea with 45 percent, and India at 44 percent of respondents confirming their, well, sadness.

Gallup surveyed individuals aged 15 and older from 2021 to early 2022 in about 122 countries, with about 1,000 respondents per location. "The margin of sampling error ranges between ±2.0 and ±5.5 percentage points at the 95-percent confidence level. The margin of error reflects the influence of data weighting," the survey methodology reads.
