James Corden Forced to Revise 'Spill Your Guts' Segment After Ridiculing Asian Delicacies Like Balut
Popular late night talk show host James Corden is in hot water after ridiculing Asian delicacies like balut (fertilized bird egg) from the Philippines and pídàn (century old egg) from China on his show.
"Spill your guts” is a regular segment on The Late Late Show that forces celebrity guests to choose whether to spill a secret or eat whatever “revolting” food is placed in front of them. The segment has racked up millions of views on YouTube, but it wasn’t until recently that viewers noticed that Corden had added Asian delicacies to the table, inciting the rage of plenty of Asians and Asian-Americans who were insulted that their food was presented as “disgusting.”
Corden eventually apologized, but announced that they won’t be pulling the segment. Instead, he revealed on The Howard Stern Show that they’ll be replacing culturally important foods from the segment with fatty food like a giant pizza covered in cheeseburgers.
For many, food is personal and cultural, which explains why some viewers were upset to see how their food was portrayed in the show. At the same time, many netizens were equally unhappy with cancel culture targeting James Corden.
The entire fiasco began in early June when a viral TikTok showed how the food “punishments” were actually Asian delicacies, but were sometimes not labeled with their correct names. For example, thousand-year-old egg has been a constant dish in the show, but it’s actually known as pídàn in Hunan, China. Another Asian dish featured was xu? dòuf?, which is pig’s blood tofu from Hong Kong.
ok but this is actual Asian food & youre going on live tv telling people how gross it is. thats cringe? original sound - Kim Saira
“Wow, it all looks so terrible,” Jimmy Kimmel said in one video. “It’s really disgusting. It’s horrific,” Corden replied.
The creator of that TikTok video then started a change.org petition that got the ball rolling, gathering over 40,000 signatures in support of a petition to remove the “Spill Your Guts” segment from the show altogether.
“In the wake of the constant Asian hate crimes that have continuously been occurring, not only is this segment incredibly culturally offensive and insensitive, but it also encourages anti-Asian racism. So many Asian Americans are consistently bullied and mocked for their native foods, and this segment amplifies and encourages it,” according to the petition.
In short, don't mess with Asians and their food.
