Mar Roxas Will Not Return to Politics, Says Wife Korina Sanchez

"Wala rin sa pulitika si Mar. Ang sabi niya sa akin, ayaw na niyang bumalik."

Mar Roxas has retired from politics, according to his wife Korina Sanchez.

Korina revealed her husband's retirement in an interview on the program ‘Wag Po of One PH news channel. The hosts of the program are Ed Lingao, Patrick Paez, Lourd de Veyra, Melvyn Calderon, Jove Francisco, and Manuel Mogato.

Mar's departure from politics was brought up when Korina was asked how she balanced her life as a journalist with being a politician's wife. Korina married Mar at Sto. Domingo Church in Manila on October 27, 2009. Korina is an established broadcaster of ABS-CBN, while Mar is also experienced in the world of politics.

Mar was a congressman in the First District of Capiz from 1993 to 2000; then became a senator from 2004 to 2010. Mar also served as the head of the Department of Transportation (2011-2012) and Department of the Interior and Local Government (2012-2015).

On the program, Korina explained that it was important that she prove her own ability as a journalist.

The 56-year-old veteran broadcaster said: “Well, I think I had a great fortune of working for our bosses in ABS-CBN who recognized the fact that I was and am a journalist. I was a journalist long, long before I fell in love with a politician. And I guess, in this country, credibility as you yourselves will see today... Credibility is in the eye of the beholder. Meaning, credibility cannot be defined in a box. So that even then as it is today, the audience was accepting of a Korina even if I had a Mar."

ABS-CBN's Strict Guidelines

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs made sure that Korina was careful to avoid any conflict of interest while Korina was there.

She said, "But I tried, in the organization, talagang sinubukan talaga… so that even in the eyes of the audience, I would never do a story that had anything to do with my husband. It’s very tricky. As you yourself probably have seen, I’ve been to the principal’s office more than too many times in my lifetime. Oo, napapagalitan din ako nun, hindi naman parati pero konting mali mo lang, they will get you to task. I got suspended a few times because they say I cross the line etcetera, which I accepted.”

That is why, in her personal opinion, it is better for journalists or newscasters not to turn programs into political commentary shows.

She added, “So that’s why I really think, first of all commentators, for me ha, ito’y para sa akin lang, editorial commentators on radio should not be doing hard news, that’s what I think. I think there’s too many accidents, too many miscommunication, image confusion, if an anchor of a TV news program is also very opinionated and is in radio doing political commentary. I really think there should be a defining line pero kasi napunta ako dun sa panahon na wala, all those lines were blurred.”

On Mar Retiring From Politics

It was here that Korina mentioned that Mar had said that he had turned his back on politics.

Mar has already run in three national elections, in which he lost all three times. First was in 2010 as vice president where he was defeated by Makati City Mayor Jejormar Binay. In 2016, Mar ran for the presidency but was defeated by Davao City Mayor and incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte. In the last 2019 election, Mar ran for senator again but he was not lucky enough to win.

Korina said, “So in hindsight, now that I’m away from all of that... And Mar, wala rin sa pulitika si Mar. Ang sabi niya sa akin, ayaw na niyang bumalik, parang mas malinaw na sa akin yun, yung mga delineation na ganyan."

Mar's retirement from politics is also one of the reasons why Korina is not in a hurry to have a hard news program.

"And that’s why I also think that maybe hard news can wait for a while before I can go back to it. So there. So to answer your question, oo, oo, mahirap talaga.”
