A WW1 Bomb Was Found at the Pop Up in Katipunan

Customers at The Pop Up in Katipunan, Quezon City had the fright of their lives when a bomb threat interrupted their ‘Happy Thursday’ celebrations yesterday. In case you didn’t know, Pop Up is an al fresco food hub made out of movable container vans, meaning the space can be transformed from having—yup, you guessed it—pop-up stalls into an events space for anything under the sun. It’s an architectural marvel in itself, but that’s a conversation for another time. 

The trendy hangout spot is a hit among the young crowd from nearby universities, especially on weekends when they invite local artists to perform live. But on the evening of July 6, patrons were asked to temporarily vacate the premises after an alleged explosive device was found. It caused some panic, understandably so.

According to reports, it was a  service crew at Pop Up who found the bomb as he was cleaning out the area. It was sitting casually near chairs and tables at an oyster bar restaurant in the establishment. He immediately turned over the bomb to the security guard on duty, who then alerted the nearby QC police station. 

After further investigations, it was discovered that the explosive was an 81-millimeter vintage mortar bomb that dates back to World War I. Render Safe Procedures were also conducted by QCPD's District Explosive Ordinance Disposal Canine Unit (DECU) and they confirmed the device to be inert. 

Katipunan (Katip to some) is definitely the last place anyone would expect antiques to turn up, but alas. Talk about putting the ‘pop’ in Pop Up. Well, apparently, it belonged to an old vendor who left it among stocks that were being inventoried. What a memento, indeed.
