Bridgerton Is Here to Make Regency Style Cool Again

Tight trousers are poised for a comeback.

Netflix's crowd-favorite period drama Bridgerton has recently returned for another season. That means the opulent soirees and courtship festivities have officially recommenced. Needless to say, London's most eligible bachelors are up for the occasion—equipped with their finest coats and cravats. And, it seems that the internet has caught the #Regencycore fever too.

So, when exactly did this trend emerge? In the aftermath of the French revolution, around the era that the show is set in, Western men shifted from ostentatious to more minimalistic fashion. That said, they preferred muted and functional pieces instead of those with loud hues and patterns. While not entirely historically accurate, the costumes this season are a modern twist on much of the popular staples of that era.

Of note are the overcoats with flared collars to emphasize the silhouette. We're especially fond of one velvet number sported by Anthony Bridgerton for his daily strolls. For an elegant twist, he pairs his coats with a crisp cravat wrapped neatly in a bow. It's sort of like an avant-garde take on the tuxedo.

Another consistent detail throughout the season is white linen shirts. Fun fact: During this era, it was viewed as a symbol of hygiene and wealth. The more subdued and (seemingly) effortless a man was dressed, the more aristocratic he was perceived. As seen above on Benedict Bridgerton, this was typically worn as a base for layering pieces.

If you'd like to have a Calvin Klein model moment like Anthony, that works just fine too.

Apart from linen undergarments, a staple in the show are trousers tucked in knee-high riding boots. Reminiscent of pantaloons, these tight-fitting bottoms are made to support physical activity and accentuate the leg extremities. So, if you've watched the show, you'd recognize the Bridgerton men flaunting them in sporting events such as hunting and Pall-mall. In a nutshell: this is the Regency era version of what we now know as streetwear.

Last but not least, a proper Regency man always carries a watch fob. These are watch dials attached to ornamental chains that hang from the pocket. While it's more of a decorative piece, it adds a bit of excitement to the otherwise monochrome styles of that era.

And while we may not be able to casually ride horses in our backyard all day looking like walking Ralph Lauren advertisements, perhaps a neat linen shirt and trousers may give us a glimpse of what it feels like to be a Bridgerton for a day.
