Ferragamo Now Has a More Affordable Leather Goods Collection

Ferragamo planned this well. To give credence to its new line of affordable luxury goods for men—an incongruous idea but give it a chance—the Italian fashion house anchors it to history.

In particular, it calls on the power of time and place: the year 1927, which marked “Salvatore Ferragamo’s return to Italy after a great success in Hollywood,” and the Palazzo Spini Feroni, the medieval palace that has been the headquarters of the Florentine fashion house for 82 years. The detail to note in the latter is how the palazzo stands along via Tornabuoni. Thus we arrive at Tornabuoni 1927, a name that combines the values of glamour and triumph, power and heritage in one masterful roll of the tongue.

That’s the idea but how does it look? The set of large and small leather goods is certainly less formal, taking on the shape of a plastic shopping bag, not shying away from nylon, and using 3D rubber logo application (the last two are found in a backpack). The collection, after all, is meant for the occupation of leisure and not for the times spent in the boardroom, a concept that explains, even more, its younger vibe and agreeable price points.

But while the set is made for the now, you can’t say that Ferragamo has jumped the shark and created stuff intended for posturing on social media. The soft and light sailing bag, tote, and clutch, all of which are made of deerskin and embossed with “Firenze 1927,” and the city-friendly nylon waist bag (a belt bag in everyday parlance) all possess a quiet coolness that also speaks of Ferragmo's elegance.
