Live from Paris: Givenchy Fall 2017 Men’s Show
While you wait for the show to begin at 1 a.m. on January 21, Saturday, here are eight things to know about the French fashion house Givenchy.
Here’s an off-the-cuff description of the Givenchy look: dark glamour. For men, that can mean a dynamic tension between upscale and street, an adept use of prints, and maybe urban warrior with a bite. Spring’s show, however, presented less angst with a proposition for contemplative travel and loose pants, so that lightness may continue.
Hubert de Givenchy founded the French luxury brand on the virtues of unquestionable good taste. He’s also the man responsible for the popularity of the little black dress, as worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Please thank him.
The house’s current creative director, Riccardo Tisci, joined the company in 2005. The Italian designer introduced gothic, romantic, and religious undertones to the storied brand, transforming its look to something more dangerous and modern and covetable.
Givenchy and Tisci have a celebrity following that includes Kanye West, Jessica Chastain, Beyoncé, Rihanna, fellow designer Donatella Versace, and lots of very beautiful models.
Oh, here’s how you pronounce Givenchy: jhee-von-SHEE.
Famous pieces include many things drenched in prints, most famous of which is the sweatshirt emblazoned with the portrait of an angry Rottweiler. There is also sweet ol’ Bambi (from Disney) spliced with an eerie oil painting on a T-shirt and micro-florals on a tough leather backpack. Tisci is a romantic at heart.
Also, the infamous leather kilt worn by Kanye a few years back. He said to MTV.com: “When you sit down with Riccardo Tisci at the Louvre and he pitches the idea of you wearing a leather kilt…at that point you are now a part of the fashion world.”
In other pop news, Mrs. West has been spotted clad in a sheer floor-length Givenchy for what appears to be a cameo in the upcoming all-female Ocean’s Eight.
