Someone in Esquire HQ is a fan of the multi-talented author, writer, host, and doodler, Lourd de Veyra, and so, here we are, dissecting his style.

It would be a post on Instagram from around four weeks ago that set things in motion. Dressed in a gray suit, a repp tie, his signature headwear, and those thick-rimmed eyeglasses, de Veyra struck a very debonair figure—something that you may not immediately ascribe to the creative. The message from high above (very high—very, very) would like to explore this please, and what we’ve discovered from his adventures in suiting is how wearing the armor of men does not mean looking stiff or feeling stilted. If you incorporate your signature moves, your personality, and your charm, suits can be quite fun.

Here’s how de Veyra suits up:

It’s this one. De Veyra includes the hashtag #beatnikstyle in the caption of this sartorial affair. The writer points to the young dreamers of the ’50s and ’60s, who wore a lot of black, dark sunglasses, and, yes, those jaunty berets. It was a move away from the establishment, and our subject similarly subverts the tenets of suiting, pairing a classic gray two-piece with Dr. Martens and (what looks like) his signature Kangol hat. It all works.

Here, he disrupts the popular combo of white-sneaker-with-suit with a pair of crispy black Adidas Sambas. Those fluorescent yellow stripes contrast well with the blue of the suit, too.

De Veyra has adventurous, not to mention very brave, taste in suiting. The host combines two of the most difficult suit elements together: a double-breasted jacket and a pattern. The similar hues of his rig, from headwear to tie to suit, make this rig seamless.

Three things: a close up of the sublime preppiness of a repp tie, a reminder to wear a face mask always, and a plug of his latest book.

The strictest of menswear aficionados would never break up a suit, but there are no rules now. Lourd executes the tricky move well by creating contrast: dark jacket plus light trouser.

Is brown a trendy color? A tricky color? The doo-doo hue? If you’re de Veyra, you just make the brown suit look good.

One sure way to dampen the severity of a black suit is by adding a rush of colors. Please note the socks and the Vans creepers, too.

When in doubt, do blues. But when you want to stand out a little bit (or a lot), sprinkle in pattern and accessories. But always mind the fit. De Veyra’s real secret is that his suits appear to be made for him.
