Proudrace Presents a Love Letter to Modern Filipinos at BYS Fashion Week

The contrast between the stoic look of Proudrace’s runway models and its collection highlighted the emotional depth that designer Rik Rasos wanted to convey at the BYS Fashion Week (BYSFW) 2024. The unboxing of his fashion care package, “From Proudrace with Love,” stood out as a tribute to the Filipino tradition of sending balikbayan boxes. 

The Philippines’ garments and textile export sector became a $3 billion industry some years ago and has likely only gone up since. The sector maintains its global competitiveness and continues to be a significant contributor to the economy, with exports valued at approximately $1.5 billion according to recent GDP reports. 

This sustained growth can be attributed to the ongoing movement to support the local fashion industry by promoting Filipino designs and craftsmanship and celebrating the country’s rich cultural heritage.

BYS Philippines has been all about Filipino artistry and creativity, providing a platform for creatives in the local fashion industry through BYSFW. The Fashion Week brought together a total of 10 Filipino designers–seasoned veterans and budding talents alike.

Founded by Rik Rasos, Proudrace is known for its unique fusion of streetwear and high fashion. Its runway moment was an expression of love (metaphorically, a balikbayan box) for its roots and Filipino wearers. 

“I wanted to present a collection that is not just clothes, I wanted the pieces to have a deeper connection with where I came from and how I got to where I am,” Rasos shared in a previous interview.

Proudrace showcased its signature technique of layering, deconstructing and reconstructing fabrics, creating inventive silhouettes that felt nostalgic and avant-garde. The collection used materials such as wool, Japanese twill, and sheepskin leather that brought texture and depth to the runway while maintaining a casual and curated look that blended street culture with high fashion.  

The collection didn’t just reflect style but also spoke to Raos’ journey and goal of resonating deeply with Filipino audiences. 

“I’ve been doing most of my activities for Proudrace overseas and I’ve always been looking for ways to connect more with my roots and my Filipino audience,” the designer said. “So when I was approached to do this, I thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase what Proudrace is doing when we present our collections overseas—to show that we are not just the T-shirt brand many people know us for.”

Local fashion icons headlined the 2024 BYS Fashion Week, including celebrated designers like Rajo Laurel, Russel Villafuerte, and Patty Ang known for their influence in shaping the local fashion scene. Celebrities such as Nadine Lustre, James Reid, Issa Pressman, and Donny Pangilinan also alked the runway.
