Here’s How to Deal with Gigantic Pores Like a Grown-Ass Man

Don't take this intervention the wrong way. It's your pores we're talking about. They flush out toxins while regulating your body temperature as the vessels for sweat, and help strenghten your body's first line of defense against the elements by excreting sebum. But on your face? Nobody really needs to see them.

Maybe you missed the genetic jackpot. Maybe you're even dealing with acne. Or maybe it's just the wear and tear of years starting to show. So, we’ve come with expert advice from Dr. Z Teo of The Aivee Clinic and A Institute who presents us with doable solutions, man to man.

Get Active—Active Ingredients, That Is

1| Clean with salicylic acid

You're going to wash your face anyway so you might as well use something more efficient. Keeping it clean isn't a one-step thing when stickier stuff like excess oil (usually pumped up by out-of-whack hormones, stress, and diet) as well as bacteria and dead skin cells choke your skin. “Since men have oilier skin than women, it is advisable to use a cleanser with salicylic acid to remove excess oil,” says Teo. 2| Shrink pores with toner

And while you're at it, get a toner. It balances your skin's pH so it isn't prone to redness and irritation. Heck, you can even use it as an aftershave. “Toner can also make pores look temporarily smaller,” Teo points out. VMV Hypoallergenics Fine Finish Pore Minimizing Skin Mattifier

3| Consider retinol

A power ingredient for serums that experts love is retinol. “Retinol helps unclog pores and boost collagen to reduce fine lines and improve skin's ability to increase cell turnover,” he adds. This means your skin will act and look younger, basically solving all your other concerns in the long run. Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum

4| Hydrate and protect

Keep up that progress with moisturizer to maintain hydration and sunscreen to protect skin during daytime. UV damage degrades collagen—that means saggy skin, fine lines, and more pronounced pores. Think of the skin as a sponge: When it's dry and worn out, the holes are bigger. Check the ingredients for physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Laneige Homme Sun Protection Stick

Not Fast Enough? Leave It To The Pros
Step away from those clickbait peel-off mask videos claiming instant results. Haven't you learned anything from Dr. Pimple Popper?

1| Don't underestimate a good facial
Think of it as a productive pause. It's relaxing—you might even enjoy it—and if done right with active ingredients and the best devices, your skin gets a good purging and replenishment, too.

2| Get zappin' (with laser treatments)
But if you want even faster results, Teo singles out the GLP (Gentle Laser Pores) as his favorite laser treatment. “This treatment has very minimal downtime. It makes my skin look younger,” he says. “Laser energy creates millions of microscopic treatment zones in the upper layers of the skin, replacing damaged skin with healthy, younger-looking tissue. This minimizes pore size.” Dr. Teo had to use it on himself to zap a few minimal acne scars in a jiffy. (There was no pain, either. He even documented the procedure on his Instagram.) With the GLP, you can be out and about with fresher-looking skin as early as the next day.

3| Go even deeper
If you have pockmarks, Teo recommends deeper-penetrating lasers like the Pico Fix and Pico MLA, “It uses deep picosecond lasers to repair textural deformities on the skin like acne scarring, which is also a case of enlarged pores,” he explains.

What to choose? It depends on how much time you have. For the Pico Fix, you won't have to worry about redness. You can squeeze it in during lunchtime, but expect a gradual repair of textural deformities, so you'd have to go back for a couple of sessions. On the other hand, the Pico MLA is a one-time, big-time treatment. You'd need a few anti-social days because you will be red. When that's over, you’ll be smooth as a baby's bottom. As for the pain, it's nothing you can't handle.
