In Her Youth
In 2017, Forbes said that Ang "remains a most elusive, mysterious tycoon" amid her year-by-year inclusion in the list of Philippines' richest people. They even added that "she and her staff do not respond to emails or phone calls, and the company website makes no mention of her or its nine-member board of directors.” But that was seven years ago.
As of writing, Ang is currently listed as the director and president of the company as well as the director on the board of Suntrak Corporation. It also mentioned that she graduated from Assumption College with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Business Management.
Betty Ang’s Business Empire
Monde Nissin was founded in 1979 as Monde Denmark Nissin Biscuit Corporation by Ang and her father-in-law Hidayat Darmono (a.k.a. Kwee Boen Twie), patriarch of the Kweefanus family with Indonesian lineage. Hoediono Kweefanus is Ang's husband and Darmono's second son. The Darmono family also owns Khong Guan Biscuit Factory Indonesia.
Under Ang's leadership, Monde Nissin has grown exponentially from its humble beginnings. Ten years after it was founded, the company launched Lucky Me! noodles, which eventually became a household staple in the Philippines.
By 1999, Monde Denmark Nissin Biscuit Corporation officially changed its name to Monde Nissin Corporation. Over the years, Ang has diversified the company's offerings, venturing into baked goods, dairy products, and health food options. Its flagship brands, including Lucky Me!, SkyFlakes, Fita, Nissin, M.Y. San Grahams, Mama Sita, and Dutch Mill, are among the leading ones in the market.
Lucky Me! has retained its position as the leader in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and Food Brands categories in the Philippines for 2022, according to Kantar’s Asia Brand Footprint report. This accolade reflects the strong brand loyalty and market presence that Lucky Me! continues to enjoy, bolstering Monde Nissin's overall market standing.
Monde Nissin’s Venture With Quorn
In April 2024, Monde Nissin reported a P625-million net loss in 2023 due to a decline in sales of Quorn.
British brand Quorn, acquired by Monde Nissin in 2015, has been at the forefront of producing meat substitutes primarily from mycoprotein, a protein derived from fungi. This ingredient is celebrated for its environmental benefits and nutritional value, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional meat. However, despite these advantages, the brand has encountered hurdles as consumer interest in meat alternatives shows signs of decline, particularly in major markets like the United States and the United Kingdom.
The company's financial struggles were highlighted in its latest fiscal report, which revealed a net loss significantly higher than in previous years. This downturn is attributed to a variety of factors, including inflationary pressures that have affected consumer purchasing behavior and a general decline in the hype surrounding meat substitutes. The U.S. market, in particular, has seen a slowdown, prompting Monde Nissin to recalibrate its marketing strategies and operational focus.
In response to these challenges, Monde Nissin's CEO, Henry Soesanto, emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to the plant-based sector. Despite the current market setbacks, Soesanto remains optimistic about the long-term potential of sustainable and clean-label alternative proteins. This sentiment is echoed by Quorn's CEO, Marco Bertacca, who noted a strategic shift towards strengthening the brand's position in its largest market, the UK, while also trying to revitalize its presence in the U.S. through targeted marketing and product placement initiatives.
Monde Nissin’s Impact on Philippine Economy and Society
The impact of Betty Ang's leadership extends beyond her company's financial success. She has played a pivotal role in shaping the Philippine economy through job creation with the company being one of the largest employers in the Philippines, providing thousands of jobs across its operations. It also makes contributions to community development through various CSR activities aimed at improving education, environmental sustainability, and health care in the communities it operates.
Monde Nissin's commitment to corporate governance and sustainability has also been recognized with the award of three Golden Arrows at the 2023 ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard Golden Arrow Awards for its first-ever Corporate Governance Report. This accolade is a testament to the company's dedication to transparency and ethical business practices, further enhancing its reputation in the corporate world.
“The three Golden Arrows is a good indicator of where we are right now as an organization in terms of governance and compliance, and this recognition from the ICD points us to the direction of where we want to be in the future: a well-governed and compliant PLC amidst the shifts and transformations in the business sector,” said Chief Compliance Officer, Atty. Jon Edmarc R. Castillo, through Monde Nissin's website.
Outside the Boardroom
Outside the confines of corporate boardrooms, Betty Ang maintains a relatively low profile. All that is known is that she has six children. Her public appearances are few, and she rarely gives interviews, preferring to let her business accomplishments speak for themselves. This level of discretion has kept the focus on her professional endeavors and the achievements of Monde Nissin.
