Iñigo Zobel: Wealth, Business Empire, and Life Outside Work
Iñigo Zobel gets lost in the fray of the prestigious Zobel de Ayala clan because, well, he prefers it that way. He's always been known to keep a low profile. But that shouldn't diminish his place in upholding the family (and his father's) tradition of excellence. The son of the larger-than-life Don Enrique Zobel has managed to amass fortune and influence worthy of the family name and then some.
With interests in mining, real estate, packaging, infrastructure, finance, and food and beverage, among others, Zobel has headed at least 10 different companies in his lifetime. He has, nonetheless, achieved much of his wealth because of his stake in San Miguel Corporation through Top Frontier Investment Holdings, its biggest shareholder.
The chairman of Top Frontier Investment Holdings and Director of San Miguel Corporation, Zobel's social pedigree and business acumen have only added to the Zobel de Ayala family's storied history. Here's everything we know about Iñigo Zobel.

In His Youth
Born in 1957 to the late great industrialist Enrique Zobel and Spanish artist Rocío Urquijo Novales, Iñigo Zobel was one of three children in his father's first marriage, along with María de las Mercedes and Jácobo Santiago or "Santi" (who tragically passed away at just 11 years of age). He bore the weight of being the son of a patriarch whose stature towered over his contemporaries in Philippine business circles.
His father joined Ayala y Compañia in 1955 and practically became one of the architects of the Makati we see today. He would become its first chief executive when it became a conglomerate. The younger Zobel had his hands full, to say the least.
A cousin of Jaime Augusto and Fernando Zobel de Ayala, the other Zobel attended Santa Barabara College in California before becoming the chairman and president of Enrique Zobel, Inc. in 1983. The company focused on social and economic development in Calatagan, Batangas. Two years earlier, he was appointed president of Hacienda Bigaa, Inc. (Hacienda Calatagan), which owned lands in the area. Zobel would help set the stage for Calatagan's future prosperity.
Iñigo Zobel's Business Empire
His initial leadership positions in the family's Batangas-based property arms in the early '80s carried over to more posts in the next two decades. Zobel became the director of Calatagan Resort, Inc. in 1985, president and director of Calatagan Golf Club, Inc. in 1987, and director of Calatagan Bay Realty, Inc. in 1995. He also became the director of the real estate company, Mermac, Inc. later on. Zobel was once the president of Diamond Star Agro Products, Inc. and PAL Express, as well.
Nowadays, he's best known as the chairman of Top Frontier Investment Holdings, which has a 66-percent stake in the San Miguel Corporation (for which he was once an independent director) and a 100-percent stake in Clariden Holdings, Inc., which focuses on exploration, mining, and development. Zobel is at the helm of companies like Zygnet Prime Holdings, Inc., IZ Investment Holdings, Inc., and Manila North Harbour Port, Inc.
Zobel's Impact on Philippine Economy and Society
Zobel follows in his father's footsteps in how he's championed better access to education and culture and the arts. When Don Enrique was rendered paralyzed from the neck down after an accident in 1991, his son stepped up and continued his father's vision for the foundation.
He currently stands as the director of Enrique Zobel Foundation, Inc., a Batangas-based nonstock, non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities to economically disadvantaged youth, minorities, creatives, and communities in the region. It works with local academic institutions, students, and teachers to facilitate learning programs and scholarships.
Outside the Boardroom
Zobel is married to Maricris Zobel, with whom he has five children, namely Bianca, Paolo, Iñigo, Natalia, and Rocio. Much like most of the country's prominent families, the next-gen Zobels have established quite a presence themselves. Bianca opened the lifestyle store Lanai with her sister Natalia, who serves as its head of business development and merchandising. Rocio, on the other hand, is making a name for herself in society, fashion, and social media.
Much like his father, Zobel enjoys an active life outside his professional sphere. The billionaire loves to play polo and golf in his spare time. The elder Zobel, after all, was the first Filipino president of the Manila Polo Club.
In 2022, he made headlines with the purchase of “Siga-Siga” at a Leon Gallery auction for a staggering P44 million. The said piece was a work by the painter Fernando Zobel himself and had once been in the collection of his nephew, Don Enrique. It had previously won the gold prize winner for modern painting in the Art Association of the Philippines competition in 1953. The painting was said to have hung in his room once in his life. Zobel had fond memories of his "Tio" Fernando, who he would watch paint in his studio in Forbes Park and in Cuenca, Spain.
