In His Youth
Born on March 6, 1959, Jaime Augusto Miranda Zóbel de Ayala comes from the distinguished Zóbel de Ayala family, which has Spanish and German roots. Ayala y Compañía, one of the oldest continuously existing companies in the country, was founded in 1834. JAZA is a direct descendant of the company's founders Jacobo Zóbel y Zangroniz and Trinidad de Ayala. JAZA's father, Jaime Zobel de Ayala I, was the former president and chairman of Ayala Corporation. His brother, Fernando Zobel de Ayala, once served as president and CEO of Ayala Corporation, as well.
JAZA studied at the Ateneo de Manila University from 1966 to 1968, Ladycross School from 1968 to 1971, and Worth School from 1972 to 1976 before earning a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard College, where he was honored cum laude, in 1981. He would receive his Master's from Harvard Business School in 1987.
While studying he trained for a year with Purefoods, which was then part of the family's portfolio. Soon enough, he'd find himself growing his family's empire with his brother.
Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala's Business Empire
When Don Jaime Zobel de Ayala stepped down as CEO in 1995, JAZA stepped up while his brother, Fernando, served as president and COO. This was when the group made one big risky venture after another, including Globe Telecom.
Under his leadership, Ayala Corporation withstood some pretty challenging moves, like in the case of internet company Azalea and the Burger King chain, and even powered through the 1997 Asian financial crisis, too. In the '90s, he was awarded World Economic Forum Global Leader for Tomorrow and was named JCI Philippines Ten Outstanding Young Men.
Since that period, Zobel would go on to hold more than 20 different positions within the group over the next two decades. The Presidential Medal of Merit awardee currently serves as chairman of Ayala Corporation, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Globe Telecom, Inc., AC Energy and Infrastructure Corporation, Ayala Health Holdings, and Asiacom Philippines, among others. He is also vice chairman for Ayala Land, director of AC Ventures Holding Corp, Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited, and AG Holdings Ltd.
Succession planning has been a critical element in the corporation’s sustainability. From starting out with a distillery in Manila, the Ayala business empire, spearheaded by JAZA, would expand its interests to banking, water, industrial technologies, real estate, hotels, telecommunications, energy, motoring, and infrastructure, eventually making it one of the largest conglomerates in the Philippines.
JAZA's Impact on Philippine Economy and Society
Ayala Corporation is a founding member of Global Compact Network Philippines, which addresses the Philippines' economic and social development. A United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Pioneer, Zobel has steered Ayala Corporation towards the highest standards of environmental, social, and good governance initiatives. He has been keen on upholding accountability on these fronts. As a company, Ayala has also focused on building healthy communities that blend with their natural environments.
JAZA's work includes offering affordable housing and prioritizing low-income communities that need access to clean water. The group's energy business is at the forefront of sustainable and green initiatives while also helping far-flung and underprivileged communities in Filipino society. Ayala Corporation has also helped over 20,000 students with grants and programs through the years.
JAZA has even been an active member in different business and socio-civic organizations, including the Harvard Business School Asia-Pacific Advisory Board, Harvard Global Advisory Council, and JP Morgan International Council.
Outside the Boardroom
Suffice it to say, Zobel has married philanthropy and business seamlessly throughout much of his adult life. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have any other interests.
When he's not in the boardroom, JAZA has been known to go on road trips with his brother, riding motorcycles across the country and overseas. Interestingly, Ayala Corp is the local partner of Europe's largest motorcycle manufacturer, KTM. He's also known for speaking engagements, and, in 2021, he even began hosting a YouTube series called After Six, sponsored by BPI, of course.
He is married to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Eder, a descendant of Colombian sugar pioneer Santiago Eder. The couple is blessed with four children together: Mariana, Jaime Alfonso, Eugenia, and Mercedes.
These next-generation Zobels have begun seamlessly easing into the business limelight. Mariana is a director at Ayala Land. Jaime Alfonso, on the other hand, has been the director of Ayalaland Logistics Holdings and head of business development and digital innovation for Ayala Corporation. He also recently took on a leadership role at AC Motors, which distributes automotive brands like Kia, Volkswagen, Maxus, and others, in the Philippines. Meanwhile, Mercedes is a trustee of the Enrique Zobel Foundation. Chips off the old block, it seems.
