In His Youth

Born into a middle-class family in Manila, Jose’s early life was shaped by discipline and a deep appreciation for the value of high-quality education. His father, Ramon “Ramy” Antonio Jr., worked his way up the banking industry before retiring as Pacific Bank’s Vice President of the Foreign Department. Ramy later joined Century Pacific when it was founded by his son, becoming their Head of Human Resources.

When asked about his father’s business advice, Jose shared with philstar.com in 2018: “First, kindness to your own people. He advised me that the most important resource of your business is your people, so you need to take care of them and they should love you… Second, integrity is very important and should be taken care of. He advised that integrity should be the basis of all your transactions.”

It wasn’t just his father, however, who taught Jose the value of education, perseverance, and hard work–values that would later define the foundation of his professional and business success. His grandfather, Ramon Antonio Sr., was the first Filipino Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Vice President at a time when BPI was dominated by Spaniards.

In another interview, Jose said: “He was the first brown-skinned Vice President of BPI. Before, if you were not a coño kid, you couldn’t be a top official at BPI, San Miguel, Tabacalera, Victorias Milling, and others. They were all run by Spaniards before.”

These lessons from his father and grandfather played a significant role in shaping his perspective on business, climbing up the ladder, and life in general. Further reflecting on his youth, Jose said that his motivation for getting a scholarship and studying hard was so he could be independent and learn as much as he could. Academically gifted, Jose graduated cum laude from San Beda College, and upon the insistence of his grandfather, he later pursued a Master’s degree in Business Management at Ateneo de Manila University.

Jose’s foray into the real estate business, however, was inspired by the biographies of certain influential people such as JP Morgan, Vicente Madrigal, and John D. Rockefeller. Out of all his readings, he surmised that most of them started their careers and businesses in real estate–and they continued to thrive. To learn more, he went to the United States in 1984 as a broker for Century 21 in San Francisco, California.

At that time, there was political and economic unrest in the Philippines, but when Jose returned, he decided to start his own company. He founded Century Properties in 1986 with just six employees. In 1997, they began selling units for their first luxury building–it was sold out in the same year.

What began as a real estate brokerage firm quickly expanded into a full-fledged property development powerhouse. Notable projects include:

Trump Tower at Century City – a landmark collaboration with the Trump Organization, bringing ultra-luxury living to Makati City.

• Gramercy Residences – a 71-story, New York-inspired luxury tower designed by Roger Villarosa Architects & Associates, along with Jerde Partnership.
• Azure Urban Resort Residences – Featuring a man-made beach and a Paris Hilton-designed beach club, this development redefined urban resort living in Metro Manila.
• Milano Residences and Acqua Livingstone – Designed in collaboration with Versace Home and MissoniHome, respectively, these projects elevated real estate branding in the Philippines.
• Century Spire – A Daniel Libeskind and Armani/Casa collaboration, blending world-class architectural ingenuity with Italian luxury.

Century Properties is not only focused on providing high-end developments, but they’ve also tapped into the mass market through PHirst Park Homes, their affordable housing subsidiary. PHirst aims to deliver 50,000 homes in the next five years, generating an estimated P110 billion in revenue. Jose’s ability to cater to both luxury and affordable segments showcases his decades of experience in understanding the diverse needs of Filipino homebuyers.

Impact on Philippine Society and Economy

Through PHirst Park Homes, Jose has helped bridge the housing gap, providing quality yet affordable homes for first-time buyers. His contributions to the industry have earned him prestigious awards, including the Southeast Asia Property Awards’ 2012 Real Estate Personality of the Year and the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from Harvard Business School.

He has also been a strong advocate for sustainable development, ensuring that his projects incorporate green spaces and energy-efficient designs. In particular, their P1.6 billion Asian Century Center in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig City, was pre-certified for the core and shell rating of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Jose also served as Special Envoy of Trade to the United States under President Rodrigo Duterte and was later re-appointed as Ambassador-at-Large under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Given his business relationship with United States (US) President Donald Trump; his diplomatic position is expected to promote and bring in foreign investments in the Philippines. As the developer of Trump Tower Manila, Century Properties was a key partner of the Trump Organization, marking one of the most significant real estate collaborations between the Philippines and the US.

On potential conflict of interest, Jose told Inquirer Lifestyle in 2016: “Is it a crime that I know the president-elect? Is it odd that we have done business with his family?” He further iterated that Century Properties’ relationship with the Trump Organization started way before Trump had any plans of entering politics.

Outside the Boardroom

Outside of his towering success in real estate and diplomacy, Jose maintains a deep passion for travel, photography, and philanthropy. An active member of the Camera Club of the Philippines and Leica Club Manila, he held his first solo exhibit, entitled Across the Continents: A Travelogue Series, in 2019. J. Antonio Foundation donated proceeds from the exhibit to Operation Smile Philippines and Haven for the Elderly.

Hand-in-hand with his love for photography is his hunger for different cultures and landscapes. In a Philippine Star article, Jose shared his most memorable trips: a family trip to Harbin, Northeast China, where they experienced a negative 27-degree winter, and a visit to a South Korean Buddhist monastery near Jeju Island, where he was granted the unique privilege of staying overnight–albeit sleeping on the floor without a mattress.

Jose is married to Hilda Reyes Antonio and they have four children: John Victor “Jigger,” Jose Marco, Jose Roberto “Robbie,” and Jose Carlo. They all currently hold or previously held key positions in Century Properties: John Victor is the Vice Chairman, Jose Marco is the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jose Carlo is the Managing Director and Board Member, and Jose Roberto was the Co-Managing Director (currently he is the Founder and CEO of Revolution Precrafted).

Jose credited Hilda for her excellent upbringing of their children. Hilda shared in the same article, “I was a full-time mom in raising them…Even when they were kids, it was already my dream for all of them to study college at the best Ivy League universities. I was very happy when our three sons went to study at Wharton in the University of Pennsylvania, and one son, Robbie, went to study at Northwestern University and Stanford.”

At 77, Jose remains unstoppable. He continues to be hands-on in the company, ensuring its continued growth while balancing his diplomatic commitments. After all, Jose stays true to his mantra: “To retire is to expire.”
