Why Did Chavit Singson Enter the Car Distribution Business with Dongfeng Motors?

Chinese automotive brand Dongfeng Motors has officially entered the Philippine market through distribution company Legado Motors, which is owned by former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson. The company’s initial offering to local buyers includes its flagship electric vehicles and hybrid models, which were launched at an event at the Metrowalk Tent in Pasig City that was attended by no less than President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

“The launch of these Dongfeng EVs is a testament to our commitment to a sustainable future for the Philippines,” President Marcos Jr. said. “We are making eco-friendly transportation accessible to all while also bolstering our nation's efforts to combat climate change.

From passenger bus lines and aviation, Singson’s business interests have always included transportation and logistics, so it was little surprise to many that the former politician has also now entered automobile distributorship. As chairman of Legado Motors, Singson’s vision is to provide the Filipino public with budget-friendly, eco-friendly, and highly efficient EV and electrified mobility options. According to the company’s news release, its partnership with Dongfeng Motors “represents a significant step forward in the nation's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and combat climate change.”

“Legado Motors, Inc. is proud to be at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution in the Philippines,” Singson said. “Our partnership with Dongfeng Motors aligns perfectly with our vision of affordable and sustainable mobility. We are confident that these models will be well-received by the Filipino people.”

Launched at the event were the Dongfeng Mini EV, which has a suggested retail price of ?888,000, which reportedly makes it the most affordable compact crossover in its lineup. Meanwhile, the Aeolus Huge Hybrid, which is priced at ?1.880 million, is an SUV that comes with a hybrid powertrain and features a spacious interior design.

Lastly, the Forthing Friday comes in two variants: a base variant that has a range of 430 kilometers at full charge and is priced at ?1.98 million, and a second variant with a 630-kilometer range priced at ?2.58 million.

In his speech at the event, Singson said he envisions the future of mobility in the Philippines to have greener, more budget-friendly, and environmentally responsible vehicles. He is contributing to this end by offering cost-efficient and sustainable alternatives with competitive prices.
