Today I Learned: In Celebration of its 80th Birthday, Ferrari Has Rolled Out its Most Expensive Road Car Ever

Ferrari won’t be celebrating its 80th anniversary until 2027, but it has already rolled out its most expensive road car ever in anticipation of the milestone event. 

The much-anticipated Ferrari F80 is a limited production model that promises to set new standards in the world of high-performance supercars. Fresh from the Maranello-based manufacturer, the F80 comes from four decades of special Ferrari-red bloodlines, starting with the iconic 1984 GTO, the legendary F40, and the innovative LaFerrari Aperta.

Only 799 units will be produced of the F80, which not only pays homage to Ferrari's storied history but also embraces a future that prioritizes sustainability without compromising performance. The price tag for the F80 is a whopping $3.9 million (about P224.4 million). 

According to Reuters, the unit is already sold out and deliveries will commence in the fourth quarter of 2025. It will be in production until 2027, the year of Ferrari's 80th anniversary.

The hybrid engine system of the Ferrari F80 is significant for several reasons, especially in the context of Ferrari's commitment to merging cutting-edge technology with high-performance engineering. This hybrid system, which combines a turbocharged V6 internal combustion engine with an advanced electric drive, not only enhances power output—delivering the aforementioned 1,200 horsepower—but also improves efficiency and responsiveness. The same powertrain architecture utilized in the F80 was also employed in the Ferrari 499P race car, which achieved notable success in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Specifically, the 499P secured victory at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in both 2023 and 2024. These wins not only underscore the effectiveness of Ferrari's hybrid technology in extreme racing conditions but also showcase the seamless transfer of innovations from the track to road cars like the F80. 

The F80 features an innovative architecture that emphasizes a driver-centric layout while ensuring passenger comfort. Ferrari says the narrower cabin design reduces drag and weight, reflecting the brand’s commitment to aerodynamics and performance. The active aerodynamic elements, such as the rear wing and front triplane wing, also work to generate up to 1,000 kg of downforce at 250 kph, ensuring that the F80 remains glued to the road under any conditions. Meanwhile, the exterior design not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also serve a practical purpose in optimizing the vehicle's aerodynamic profile.

The F80 has a top speed of 350 kph. 

Despite its status as a supercar, the Ferrari F80 carries elements and features that push the concept of sustainability forward. And it’s not just limited to hybridization but extends to the materials used and the manufacturing processes involved. Carbon fiber, lightweight alloys, and advanced engineering techniques have been employed to ensure that the F80 is not only powerful but is also highly efficient.
