Meet the 'Family' of Land Rover Defenders

Not many people know it, but the Land Rover Defender we know today is a direct descendant of the original Land Rover series that was first developed in the late 1940s. There’s been a whole slew of changes since then, of course, but the core values of the iconic off-roader remain—durability, versatility, a tough, go-anywhere attitude, and can-do spirit. 

In essence, the Defender is the obvious choice when you want both sturdy but sophisticated. The classy daily driver that gets you to the office and back, or the capable workhorse for all your routine chores and errands, is also the monster off-roader that can go pretty much anywhere. That makes it a favorite for many who want to combine coolness and refinement with power and performance.

The Land Rover Defender 90 Is Unstoppable, On- and Off-Road 

That includes fans here in the Philippines, where the Defender counts a devoted following of Filipino adventurers. And they’ll no doubt be thrilled to know that the local distributor of the British marque has made the so-called Defender Family: three variants of the Defender line of premium SUVs, each with its own suite of distinctive and exciting features. These are the Defender 90, Defender 110, and Defender 130.

Defender 90

The two-door Defender 90 definitely brings the cool factor. The five-seater has a P300 engine, a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs. It can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 191 kph. For young up-and-comers, the 90 is definitely the one to get. 

Defender 110

Also a five-seater, the 110 is a four-door SUV that offers more load space behind the second-row seats (as much as 2,380-litres when the second row is folded). Buyers have a variety of engines to choose from—P300, D300, P400 and P400e. The HSE trim features 14-way power adjustable front seats (vs. the SE’s 12-way), an 11.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 20-inch wheels, and whole host of customizable features. Top speed is 188 kph and can zoom to 100 kph from standstill in 8.3 seconds. Land Rover says the 110 is “designed with purpose and engineered to excite.”

Defender 130

Able to accommodate up to eight (including the driver, the four-door 130 is the biggest in the Defender family. It’s all-wheel drive, has a D300 engine, has a top speed of 191 kph, and can race to 100 kph in 7.5 seconds. Land Rover says the 130’s silhouette has been elegantly extended by 340mm at the rear to provide enhanced interior space across all three rows. Just like the other members of the Defender family, the 130 has personalization options available.

Land Rover announced that it is making an electrified version of the Defender available here in the Philippines. The P400e is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that the marque says is “the most powerful and fuel-efficient Defender ever made.” It can run in all-electric mode with zero tailpipe emissions for up to 43 kilometers, including off-road where the immediate torque from the electric motor makes it even more capable.

In addition to the PHEV variant, Land Rover said it is also making the Defender with a D300 in-line six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine available in the country. Available with the 110 and 130 body designs, it delivers a blend of performance and economy while also being the most capable and durable electrified Land Rover.

The unveiling of the Defender family couldn’t have come at a better time as Land Rover revealed that the 500th Defender was just turned-over to its new owner in the country last month. Now that’s something truly worth celebrating.
