The Return of an Icon: What You Can Expect from the Next-Gen Toyota Tamaraw
The Toyota Tamaraw is officially back. Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has reintroduced the legendary nameplate in a splashy launch earlier this month in multiple venues across the country.
The Toyota Tamaraw’s revival comes at a time when Filipino businesses and individuals are looking for dependable, versatile vehicles to support their day-to-day needs. While the Tamaraw remains true to its heritage as a trusted workhorse, its latest iteration features modern design, improved performance, and enhanced durability—qualities that Toyota users have come to expect.
The next-generation Tamaraw is the successor to the popular Tamaraw from the 90s and 2000s
From the 1990s to the mid-2000s, the Toyota Tamaraw FX was widely adopted in the Philippines as a popular mode of public transportation that could seat 10 passengers. It was phased out in the late 1990s and rebranded as the Toyota Revo, which has also been discontinued.

The next generation Tamaraw, however, has undergone major design and engineering changes compared to its predecessor. Based on the IMV-0 (IMV Zero platform), the Tamaraw comes in two wheelbase lengths. The first and shorter wheelbase version (2,750 millimeters) is a 5-speed manual and is available in a 2.0-liter 1TR-RE gas engine capable of churning 139 horsepower and 183 Nm of torque.
The second wheelbase version is a bit longer (3,085 mm) and is equipped with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, with 150 horsepower and torque at either 343 Nm (manual version), or 400 Nm (automatic).

The new model also comes in either gas or diesel variants.
Those deciding to get the new Tamaraw will also get LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, power adjustable sideview mirrors, PVC seating material, manual air conditioning, and a two-speaker sound system connected to a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment screen.
The Japanese car giant is positioning the Tamaraw as an all-around workhorse, capable of being a people transport as well as being a flexible and indispensable tool for business and enterprise. At the launch, the company made sure to display various ways in which people can customize the Tamaraw—from being a food truck to delivery vehicle—depending on their specific needs.
According to Toyota, the relaunch of the Tamaraw aligns with the company’s goal of “empowering Filipino entrepreneurs and households with vehicles that embody quality, durability, and innovation. The new Tamaraw is a modern iteration of the original classic, designed to tackle the demands of both urban and rural life, while offering updated features for today’s market.”
A Milestone at the Sta. Rosa Factory
One other significant fact about the next generation Tamaraw is that it is assembled right here in the Philippines, at TMP’s manufacturing plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, which has long been a hub for Toyota’s operations in the country. With the Tamaraw’s return, the facility once again plays a critical role in delivering vehicles that cater to the needs of Filipino drivers and businesses.
