This Is What Families Can Expect From the 2022 Toyota Veloz

Is the game-changing sub-compact SUV that big of a departure from the Avanza?

What used to be another variant of the Avanza has gotten a reintroduction with its own standalone nameplate. The 2022 Veloz is supposedly a game-changer for families in the seven-seater sub-compact SUV mid-range market. But is it really?

Sharing the same platform with the Avanza, the Veloz 1.5 G CVT starts at P1.185 million while the 1.5 V CVT starts at P1.225 million. Both the 1.5 V and 1.5 G variants come with a 4-cylinder, dual VVT-i gasoline engine, boasting 104hp and 138Nm of torque.

The Veloz is available in CVT transmission with three drive modes (Normal, Eco, and Sport). The Veloz also has some pretty decent space to it, with dimensions of 4,475mm, 1,775mm, and 1,700mm. Toyota, after all, is said to be selling the unit as a group carrier made for adventurous families and friends.

From the exterior, the new Veloz is decked out with a more modern design and an exclusive overfender that distinguishes it from its base variant. The honeycomb-style grille, sleek split-type Toyota headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, and black plastic claddings give it a more premium feel. It also possesses rear view mirrors with auto-fold and welcome lamp features.

The all-new Veloz was unveiled at Toyota dealerships nationwide last April 29, officially launching in Taguig City

Meanwhile, the interior has wider, almost truck-like, fabric and leather cushioning for the seats. The steering wheel gets telescopic and height adjustment settings and has quite the feathery-smooth touch to it. There's adequate leg and headroom overall, seating in the second row may be a bit too snug for three adults. The third row should comfortably seat two people.

For a more open, on-the-go riding experience, Toyota had the Veloz's belt line lowered for a more commanding view of the road, and gave it a push-button start. The nine-inch touchscreen display on the 1.5 V CVT gets Apple Carplay and Android Auto capabilities, as well. This sub-compact SUV even has wireless smartphone charging capability.

The V CVT is also equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) features, including a pre-collision system, automatic high beam, and lane departure alert, to name a few. When it comes to the general driving experience, drivers might run into trouble with steep inclines and rough roads. Nevertheless, it is quite the upgrade from its base predecessor.

You can call it a more spacious alternative to the Raize or a lower-end brother to the Corolla Cross. Or maybe it's an Avanza with a beefed-up look packed with top-of-the-line features.

In the end, this sub-compact SUV is a viable option for parents on the hunt for a premium MPV that should hold its own for all those long family drives
