If you’re an underwater photography enthusiast, the Anilao Underwater Shootout is the perfect opportunity to put your skills to the test. Organized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Philippines Airlines (PAL), this year’s competition will take place from November 28 to December 2 in Mabini, Batangas.

Last year’s shootout attracted divers from Singapore, China, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Turkey, Portugal, the United States, Switzerland, Germany, France, Australia, and Canada. This makes it a great venue for meeting fellow professionals and hobbyists from all over the world.

You can hone your skills at a special underwater photography workshop to be held by judges Tobias Friedrich and Yoshi Hirata on November 29, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Aiyanar Beach and Dive Resort. On top of that, PAL is making it easier to bring all the gear you need by throwing in 40 kilos of extra baggage allowance for competitors.

Of course, with all the divers who will flock to Anilao for the competition, the Department of Tourism will play its part in protecting marine life by implementing a strict “No Marine Life Manipulation” policy. This means they’ll have spotters and dive guides watching to make sure photographers refrain from harassing or destroying the local flora and fauna.

You can sign up for the competition at the Anilao Shootout website, or register between November 28 and December 1 at Acacia Resort and Dive Center, where you’ll also be submitting your entries. Awarding and closing ceremonies will take place at Camp Netanya. For more information, check out the Anilao Underwater Shootout Facebook page.
