Long-Term But Open to Short? People Can Now See Exactly What You're Looking For on Tinder

If you’ve ever spent any time on dating apps, you’d know that what you’re looking for in a partner is part of the whole song-and-dance routine at the beginning part of any conversation. After you’ve matched, and depending on your preference, it sometimes takes a while before you open up to each other about what it is exactly you’re after in the app. 

Tinder is taking the guesswork out of this part of the dating process by introducing Relationship Goals, a new feature that indicates users’ preferences about what they’re looking for from the get-go. App developers say this takes the guesswork out of the whole process and gives users more agency about who they match with on the app.

“This feature was developed in response to a shift we've seen among our members,” says Kyle Miller, Vice President of Core Product at Tinder in a statement. “Young singles, who make-up a majority of Tinder, are increasingly becoming more intentional with who they spend their time with. In fact, 72 percent of Tinder members said they’re looking for someone who knows what they want.

“Relationship Goals gives members more control over their interactions and allows them to match with more intention, without missing out on a connection they wouldn’t have made anywhere else,” he adds.

So how exactly does it work?

According to Tinder, users can now tap into their profile settings and choose from six intent options: Long-term partner; Long-Term, open to short; Short-term, open to long; Short-term fun; New friends; or Still figuring it out.

All users will be able to see what potential matches have selected on their profiles, which will then help them decide better if the person is someone they want to swipe right on. 

The app will also send a prompt every week checking in that their Relationship Goals selections are still what they’re looking for, in order to account for members who change their minds in an instant.

According to Tinder, Relationship Goals is already being rolled out globally and is scheduled to be available to all members by January 5, 2023, just in time before Dating Sunday (January 8, 2023), which it says is one of the busiest dating days of the year.
