A Match Made in Superhero Heaven

Hold on to your chimichangas, folks! The unlikely duo of Deadpool and Wolverine is teaming up for an epic adventure in the upcoming movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. This film promises to be a wild ride for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

I was introduced to Deadpool's character way back in 2016. The first time I saw the trailer, I actually thought it was way too violent for a superhero movie. But his wit, charm, and occasional breaking of the fourth wall won me over and turned me into a fan. And so, here we are, eagerly awaiting this third movie and epic tandem I never saw coming. 

Directed by Shawn Levy and penned by a star-studded team that includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and Zeb Wells, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Reynolds as the irreverent Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as the iconic Wolverine. Joining them are Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.

This movie is part of Phase Five of the MCU and marks the 34th installment in the MCU. It is a direct sequel to the wildly successful Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). 

Jackman has played Wolverine since the first X-Men film way back in 2000 through to 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, where he had a brief uncredited scene, and also starred in three spin-off films, including Logan.

Years after Logan, believed to be Wolverine's final film, Jackman said in interviews that he didn't expect to return to the role because of the movie's conclusive ending. However, in 2022, he surprised MCU fans by announcing his comeback as Wolverine. The actor later told CNN's Chris Wallace, "I really thought I was done," but the opportunity to perform opposite Reynolds' Deadpool drew him back.

Reynolds returns as the charming Deadpool, geared up to deliver his signature humor, while Jackman returns as the formidable Wolverine, complete with his retractable adamantium claws and noble heart. Fans can expect a dynamic clash of personalities and epic battles as these iconic characters unite on screen once more.

Adding to the excitement, the supporting cast is brimming with talent. Corrin, known for her role in The Crown, brings her acting prowess to the superhero genre. Morena Baccarin reprises her role as Vanessa, Deadpool's love interest, while Delaney, Uggams, Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen round out the ensemble with their unique contributions.

Levy, known for his work as director of Stranger Things, brings his expertise in blending action, humor, and heart to the film.

The plot of Deadpool & Wolverine remains under wraps, but one thing is certain: fans can expect a rollercoaster of emotions as the superheroes navigate a world filled with danger, humor, and unexpected twists. With the fate of the MCU hanging in the balance, our heroes must join forces to confront a formidable enemy unlike any they've faced before.

The upcoming film marks Deadpool's MCU debut after Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, along with the X-Men and Deadpool rights. Trailers tease MCU connections, like a giant Ant-Man helmet, and show Deadpool and Wolverine leaping into what looks like one of Doctor Strange's portals.

It seems the MCU's universes are rife with mayhem. Marvel has previously established that alternate versions of its heroes exist in other universes, as depicted in Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Based on the trailers, it appears that Jackman is portraying a different version of the character than the one featured in Logan. I guess we'll just have to watch and see for ourselves.

Some diehard MCU fans have expressed concern that Deadpool & Wolverine might end up undoing Wolverine's emotional death scene in his last movie Logan. But Jackman and Reynolds previously indicated that the 2017 movie's conclusion will be kept intact.

"Logan takes place in 2029," Reynolds explained in a September 2022 video interview with Jackman. "Totally separate thing. Logan died in Logan. Not touching that."

With its stellar cast, talented director, and the perfect blend of humor and action, this film is a must-see on the big screen. 

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in movie theaters on July 26, and will be available on IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, Cinemark XD and premium screens everywhere.
