The Black Mirror Episode Trailers Offer Deeper Insight Into Season 5
The much-awaited return of Black Mirror is fast approaching. And after dropping the trailer last week, Netflix has released three more trailers from the upcoming episodes.
"Smithereens," the first episode in the season, stars Andrew Scott, Damson, Idris, and Topher Grace; "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" presents Miley Cyrus, Angourie Rice, and Madison Davenport; and "Striking Viper" features Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, and Ludi Lin. Aside from the cast, not much information is known about the three episodes.
In a 2018 interview with IndieWire, producer Charlie Booker said: “We’re doing more optimistic episodes and stories, rather than just dystopian and negative ones,” he said. “We want to keep the show interesting for us.” But, with the new trailers, it seems the series looks as terrifying as ever.
The socially relevant episodes feature a whole lot of video games, robots, guns, and action. "Smithereens" centers on the show's version of an Uber driver and how his day goes from bad to worse. The second, "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too," is about a teenager and a pop star, a theme that hits close to home for Cyrus. Then, there's "Striking Vipers," which follows two estranged college friends (Mackie and Abdul-Mateen) as well as Mackie's struggles with his family life.
The fifth season of the critically-acclaimed sci-fi anthology, which returns to Netflix on June 5, will only have three episodes. Before you question the producers, just know that the delay was caused by Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, the interactive film that took two years to bring to life.
