'I Feel Bad': What Jo Koy Has to Say About His Golden Globes Hosting Gig

A day after his widely criticized hosting of this year’s Golden Globes, Jo Koy has spoken up, admitting that it wasn’t his best night. 

The Filipino-American comedian announced, who took on the hosting gig just 10 days before the event, said he had an off-night during an interview with Good Morning America 3.

“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt,” he said. “I hit a little moment there where I was just like, hosting is just, it’s a tough gig. And, yes, I am a stand-up comic. With the hosting position, it’s a different style.”

Jo Koy offered an explanation, saying that he had little time to prepare for one of Hollywood’s biggest awards nights. He was widely criticized for apparently blaming the writers for some of his material that barely elicited any laughs.

“I kind of went in and did the whole writers thing,” Koy said. “And it’s just like no, we were all in that room together. We just had 10 days to try and write something for this monologue. It was a crash course, and I feel bad, but I gotta still say that I loved what I did.”

General consensus about Jo Koy’s hosting was that it was uncomfortable, awkward, and unfunny. During his monologue, he told a joke about the blockbuster film Barbie that many thought was reductive and misogynistic.

“‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ are competing for cinematic box office achievements. ‘Oppenheimer’ is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project. And Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies,” Koy said.

He also apparently earned the ire of pop superstar Taylor Swift when he dropped a comment about her high-profile relationship with football player Travis Kelce.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL?” Koy said. “At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” 

Despite the blowback from social media, Jo Koy voiced his appreciation for the opportunity to host one of Hollywood’s biggest stages.

“That’s one thing I want to be proud about,” he said. “It was a long journey, and the opportunity came, and no one knew where the Golden Globes was gonna be, and then last second CBS picked up the show and everyone was kind of turning down the offer because of the time, and I jumped on it. I was like, ‘You know what? Let’s try it. Let’s go for it.’”

“I was invited to one of the biggest parties in Hollywood; it’s fun,” he added. “I am a comic. A host is different. It’s not the same element, and people don't understand that in this industry.”

Asked if he would host again if he was asked, Jo Koy was evasive.

“That’s a tough gig, I’m not gonna lie,” he said. “I really love the art of stand-up, and it was cool that the opportunity came to me. Hosting is a beast, and that’s about it. I literally got the call and haven’t slept since, trying to write something.”
