The Last of Us Season 1: Everyone Who’s Died So Far

In most shows, guest stars look forward to popping up in more episodes to keep their story going. But in The Last of Us, guest stars enter the set knowing it’s a one-and-done deal. Because if you’re a guest star in The Last of Us, you’re probably going to end up dead. We’re up to Episode 6 in The Last of Us, and already we’ve lost count of all the people who’ve ended up Infected, or worse, dead.

Before the finale drops, here’s a quick recap of all the major characters who’ve croaked in the first season of The Last of Us.

Sarah

Died in Season 1, Episode 1. Played by Nico Parker.

The death that started it all. Sarah, Joel’s only child, dies in her father’s arms when she’s shot in the abdomen by a soldier. The tragic part is that Sarah survived an attack from an Infected before she was killed by a human. She died just after Outbreak Day, so at least she didn’t have to endure the post-apocalyptic nightmare society that followed. Prior to her death, the episode showed that she was already Infected at the time of her death after she ate contaminated food. Her death might have been brutal, but it might have been more merciful than becoming another Infected monster.

Tess

Died in Season 1, Episode 2. Played by Anna Torv.

As if Joel hadn’t endured enough trauma after losing his daughter, the poor guy had to lose his partner as well. Tess died saving Joel and Ellie when they were attacked by Infected in an abandoned museum. They survive the initial attack, but Tess soon reveals that she was bitten during the scuffle. She tells the two to save themselves, and as she faces a host of incoming Runners, Tess lights a pool of gasoline to burn all the Infected to death. Of course, this happens after she’s subjected to the grossest kiss in TV history. Just before she sets the place on fire, an Infected approaches her, senses she’s turning, and leans in to give her a kiss of death. You can see the fungus stretch out of his mouth to infiltrate hers, and it’s the nastiest thing we’ve seen on HBO. It was fire.

Frank

Died in Season 1, Episode 3. Played by Murray Bartlett.

Be still my heart. Frank and Bill might have had the most merciful deaths in the entire post-apocalyptic world. After surviving Infected and raiders, Frank fell victim to time. Over the decades Frank and Bill lived in relative peace, Frank developed a terminal disease unrelated to the pandemic infection. With the knowledge of his impending death, Frank drinks all of his medication so he can die peacefully in his sleep in the arms of his apocalyptic lover.

Bill

Died in Season 1, Episode 3. Played by Nick Offerman.

Frank might have died by illness, but Bill died by his own hand. He followed Frank to his death by taking his own share of pills so they could die together. Episode 3 was a heartbreaking and bittersweet episode, but if anything, it showed that Bill lived a full and happy life with Frank by his side. And without Frank, life was over and he was ready to go. Cue the tears.

Kathleen

Died in Season 1, Episode 5. Played by Melanie Lynskey.

Ah, Kathleen. Our post-apocalyptic Karen. She might give off suburban mom vibes, but Kathleen’s a ruthless leader. After hunting down Sam and Henry, Kathleen finally meets her end when a child clicker attacks her from behind and kills her. A satisfying end to a righteous bitch.

Sam

Died in Season 1, Episode 5. Played by Keivonn Woodard.

During the huge Infected attack in Episode 5, Sam was caught by an Infected and bitten, but it isn’t revealed until the bitter end. When they reach safety, Sam reveals his bite to Ellie, who tries to heal it by rubbing her immune blood on the wood. They go to sleep, but when they wake up, Sam’s checked out and the Infected has checked in. Infected-Sam tries to attack Ellie, but Joel and Henry come to the rescue. Henry, acting on instinct, shoots his little brother in the head to save Ellie and Joel. The actual shot-in-the-head act is cut from the scene, showing instead Ellie’s horrified expression. It only made Sam’s death all the more traumatic, especially when the camera then moved to Henry’s distraught and heartbroken face.

Henry

Died in Season 1, Episode 5. Played by Lamar Johnson.

We all felt it when Henry was forced to shoot his beloved little brother. That moment was so traumatizing for Henry that viewers weren’t all that surprised when he then lifted the gun to his head and fired. After Episode 3, Episode 5 was the wildest emotional rollercoaster ride.
