The Last of Us Season 2: Everything We Know So Far
We’re three episodes away from completing Season 1 of The Last of Us, and we’re already dreading the long wait for Season 2. With HBO’s rap sheet, we just know The Last of Us is going to end with the most savage cliffhanger of all time. And as sadists, we can’t freaking wait.
Before Season 1 even released its third episode, HBO renewed the snow for a second season. And with good reason. The video-game-turned-TV series is already the second-largest HBO premiere in more than 10 years, and ratings are only getting better with each new episode drop.

Release Date of The Last of Us Season 2
The Last of Us Season 1 will end on March 12, 2023, so don’t expect the second season to arrive until at least 1.5 years after that. The pandemic might be over, but we know HBO takes its time to create its shows—as it should. They wouldn’t deliver anything half-assed. Season 1 filming spanned 200 days from 2021 to 2022. Additional photography was filmed up until October 2022, just months before the pilot dropped on January 15. There have been no reports of filming starting so far, so we won’t hold our breath. The Last of Us Season 2 likely won’t arrive until 2024.
Cast of The Last of Us Season 2
There’s one pivotal character arriving in Season 2, and her name is enough to make video game fans tremble in their boots. Her name is Abby, and she’s about to deliver a reckoning. We can’t say anything else, but we promise she’s going to play a huge role in the second season of the show.
Since filming hasn’t started yet for Season 2, new cast announcements have been withheld. Abby, for now, is still uncast, as are a number of important new characters coming to The Last of Us. If Season 1 is any indication, Season 2 will be just as loyal to the video game. That means we’ll likely see new characters like Dina, Nora, Mel, Owen, Jesse, Yara, Lev, and more. These names won’t mean anything to people who haven’t played the games, but just know that most of these characters are about Ellie’s age or a little older. Joel will remain the Dad figure (or Daddy, as the Internet calls him) of the show.
Plot of The Last of Us Season 2
Based on the pacing of The Last of Us Season 1, the show will complete the arc of the first video game in The Last of Us franchise. That leaves The Last of Us Part II as the basis for The Last of Us Season 2. Expect more cross-country traveling in Season 2, as well as a number of new crazies to encounter. We won’t spoil anything, but just know that the apocalypse has a way of letting insanity thrive.
Will There be a The Last of Us Season 3?
This is where it gets tricky. There are only two main games in The Last of Us linear plot. There are a few standalone games on the side, but we have a feeling they might be incorporated into the episodes of the show. That means that the show might run out of video game material if they complete the second game’s arc in Season 2.
We’d bet our money that HBO learned its lesson with Game of Thrones when D&D butchered the source material and went beyond the plot of the books. George R.R. Martin still hasn’t completed the books, so D&D finished the story on their own volition. Suffice to say, it didn’t go over well with the fans. HBO probably knows better now, so we expect that either The Last of Us series will end after Season 2 or the show could wait until the third video game, The Last of Us Part 3, drops in the uncertain future.
