Production on The Matrix 4 is rattling along, with Mindhunter star Jonathan Groff as the latest name to be recruited for the upcoming sequel, which is set to be released in 2022.

It's an apt bit of casting, as anyone who's seen Groff turn as Agent Holden Ford can attest – the chilly, intense FBI man has more than a touch of the Agent Smiths about him. Groff joins Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who are reprising their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity respectively.

They'll also be joined by Aquaman villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, with unconfirmed reports suggesting that he could be playing a young Morpheus. Jada Pinkett Smith will be back as Niobe, and Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris will play new characters in the franchise.

Lana Wachowski is on board to write and direct the fourth Matrix movie. She's currently adapting concepts she developed with sister Lilly Wachowski for a new screenplay, collaborating with The Lazarus Project author Aleksandar Hemon, and writer David Mitchell, who she last worked with on Cloud Atlas. Here's hoping the new Matrix is slightly more accessible than that.

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now," Lana previously told Variety. "I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."
