The Sandman's Season 2 Chances Are 'Getting Higher Every Day,' Says Neil Gaiman

The Sandman could be the best show of the year and the biggest show on the planet, but it still might not be enough to see a second season, according to creator and co-showrunner Neil Gaiman. 

Despite the stellar response from critics and certified fresh 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the bar for The Sandman is extraordinarily high. 

“The Sandman is a really expensive show," tweeted Neil. "And for Netflix to release the money to let us make another season, we have to perform incredibly well. So yes, we've been the top show in the world for the last two weeks. That still may not be enough.”

But based on recent metrics, the odds of seeing season two are “getting higher every day,” said Gaiman. 

The Sandman has consistently stayed in the top 10 TV shows list in every country since its August 5 release. But Netflix also takes into consideration viewer completion rate, which indicates whether viewers actually watched a show from start to finish, and engagement statistics like consumer research and social media activity. 

Netflix has been known to cancel top-performing shows based on these metrics in order to focus on more sustainable productions, but since The Sandman has been meeting every item on the list, things are looking up. 

Even if dreaming it into existence won’t work, then The Sandman still has other options to consider. Gaiman partnered with Amazon Prime Studios and BBC Studios to produce Good Omens season two, which just completed production.
