The Witcher: Blood Origin Just Teased the Villain for Season 3
We have a lot of (negative) thoughts about The Witcher: Blood Origin, but there’s one good thing that came out of that confusing prequel. Blood Origin might have just introduced the big bad villain coming to The Witcher in season three.
Blood Origin, a four-episode prequel miniseries, covers the events that essentially created the monster-infested world of The Witcher. The entire series follows new characters, new kingdoms, and the creation of the very first Witcher. While this is all loosely tied to the main series, it was the single scene of a red wasteland that might be the prequel’s strongest connection to season three. In fact, it might have just teased the series’ next villain.
Blood Origin introduced a soldier called Eredin, and right off the bat, we knew something was up. Book fans and game fans will recognize the name that belongs to the commander of the Wild Hunt, a group of warriors who raid and pillage foreign worlds to enslave humans. Our hunch turned out to be correct because, by the end of Blood Origin, Eredin was abandoned in a red wasteland, which seemed eerily similar to Ciri’s vision. Exhausted, Eredin knelt on the ground, only to find a skull helmet buried in the sand. He put it on, and we quickly realized this might have been The Wild Hunt’s origin story all along.
The Wild Hunt, a major villain in the games and a minor opponent in the books, was teased at the end of season two when Ciri had another prophetic vision. With the single shot of Eredin donning the skull helmet, it’s clear that the main show is gearing toward a confrontation with the Wild Hunt. Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer are already on the run from Nilfgaard—add in some evil warrior elves, and you have yourselves some high-stakes fantasy entertainment.
Blood Origin was a huge step away from canon material by Andrzej Sapkowski and the video games, going so far as to create an origin story for Eredin and the Wild Hunt. We’re not quite sure how this will hold up in season three, but we can only hope that it’ll tie up the loose strings left behind by Blood Origin.
