Beyoncé's 'Break My Soul' Is Sending the World to the Dance Floor

Queen Bey is here, and she's brought with her the dance track that warms our souls. On Tuesday (June 21), Beyoncé released the first single from her highly-anticipated forthcoming album, Renaissance. The song, titled "Break My Soul" carries the flair of a '90s House track combined with an important message: We're back outside.

The single is the first to be released off Renaissance, which will be Beyoncé's seventh solo album and the follow-up to 2016's critically acclaimed effort, Lemonade. The album, dropping July 29, is presumably set to be "act i" of perhaps a larger body of work. For more on that, here's everything we know about Renaissance so far. But for now, let's focus on "Break My Soul" aka, the house-tinged dance track we didn't know we needed.

We knew that her album would feature dance tracks, but hearing it come alive is a lively experience. Vibrant and blissful, "Break my Soul" samples the '90's hit "Show Me Love" by Robin S, and brings with it a nostalgic feeling. The song is guiding us back to the dance floor after two years indoors, due to the pandemic. She sings/raps: "And we back outside/You said you outside, but you ain't that outside."

But – even then, Bey reminds us that the pandemic isn't over, and she wants you to act accordingly, "Worldwide hoodie with the mask outside/In case you forgot how we act outside," she sings. We're coming back outside. We may be bringing our masks and sanitizers with us, but regardless, we're making a return to the dance floor.

You can also find the vocals from Big Freedia, who is heavily credited with popularizing and New Orleans bounce music. On "Break My Soul" you can hear her following the theme of letting go of dead weight by chanting, "Release ya' anger, release ya' mind/Release ya' job, release the time/Release ya' trade, release the stress/Release the love, forget the rest." The Louisiana rapper, who also collaborated with Beyoncé on "Formation," a song from Lemonade, revealed how monumental it felt to work with Beyoncé on "Break my Soul."

"It feels surreal to be on the track with the Queen Beyonce once again," she said in a tweet, "I’m so honored to be a part of this special moment I’m forever grateful lord."
