Jose Miguel Brings the Timeless Music of Jazz Standards to a New Generation
The resurgence of old (aka vintage or retro) music has become a trend on digital platforms, especially with social media algorithms that allow for the discovery and rediscovery of timeless classics. Still, in this media-saturated society, appreciating old-fashioned tunes isn’t for everyone.
Ironically, this has become a motivation for younger artists to incorporate these vintage tunes into their own style. One such artist is Jose Miguel, a promising newcomer whose music is mainly influenced by crooners whose voices are inclined to jazz standards, including Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and The Rat Pack from the mid-20th century.

Miguel, based in the south side of Manila, formed the boogie fusion band Basically Saturday Night while pursuing his music production degree. He has always had an inclination toward older genres of music, and so after exploring different sounds and genres, he is going back to his jazz, folk, and big band music roots.
The artist just dropped a “doubles” release called Is This Love? that consists of a duo of love songs: Love Is You and Free. In this debut offering, Miguel puts his own unique spin to the smooth, suave, and sophisticated energy of jazz standards in order to appeal to today’s generation of listeners.
Love Is You revolves around themes of passion and longing, and invokes the feeling of seeing someone for the first time in an unremarkable place and wondering whether she’s “the one.” In reality, you’re just two lonely people who happen to be in the same place. The song explores the complex and emotional journey of the possibility of falling in love.
On the other hand, Free is an invitation to a glamorous and high-spirited night out. The tone is a blend of sophistication and charm and emphasizes a respectful and suave approach to asking someone out. The song promotes spontaneity in the context of romance.
Both songs transport listeners to a different era that speaks of the artist’s authenticity, soul, and energy. Miguel plans to release two new songs on December 15.
