You Need to Hear Weezer's Rivers Cuomo Cover Aegis' 'Halik'

Remember when you first heard Weezer and immediately went, “Rivers would sound great covering Aegis!”? No? Well, the cover you never knew you needed is here and it is GLORIOUS. 

On Friday (September 29), Rivers Cuomo, the frontman and keyboardist of the American rock band dropped a cover of the classic Filipino torch song “Halik” on his Youtube channel. It’s a stirring and faithful rendering of the Aegis hit, with Cuomo basically following the stylings of the OG vocalist (was it Juliet Sunot? We’re not sure) in the song about lost loves and passionate kisses.

While the song was uploaded on Friday, it was shared on the Weezer Facebook page on Monday, soon after it was announced that their much-anticipated appearance in the Plus63 Music Festival later this year is no longer happening owing to the show’s cancellation.

“Manila, we’re so sorry Plus63 Festival was cancelled,” the band wrote. “We tried our best to find a place to do a headline show for you, but unfortunately it didn’t end up working out. We were so excited to play this cover for you too,” followed by a link to Cuomo’s cover.

“Hopefully we can find our way back to Manila soon!” the band added.

Weezer were set to make their Philippine debut at the festival. Unfortunately, festival organizers were forced to pull the plug on the show, which was to be held for the first time in Manila, ostensibly because they are “unable to deliver the Plus63 experience that our community has been accustomed to.”

“As a result, we are indefinitely postponing Plus63 Festival Manila until we can properly and safely execute the Plus63 experience from start to finish,” organizers said.

The festival could still be mounted in the near future, so ticket holders were advised to hold on to their ticket if they didn’t want to get a refund.

In the meantime, we’ll have Cuomo’s “Halik” on repeat.
