In case you haven't heard, there is one AI chatbot that's making Google very, very nervous: ChatGPT.

Back in December of 2022, the New York Times reported on how ChatGPT is raising a "Code Red" for Google:

"Three weeks ago, an experimental chat bot called ChatGPT made its case to be the industry’s next big disrupter. It can serve up information in clear, simple sentences, rather than just a list of internet links. It can explain concepts in ways people can easily understand. It can even generate ideas from scratch, including business strategies, Christmas gift suggestions, blog topics, and vacation plans," wrote the Times.

"Although ChatGPT still has plenty of room for improvement, its release led Google’s management to declare a “code red.” For Google, this was akin to pulling the fire alarm. Some fear the company may be approaching a moment that the biggest Silicon Valley outfits dread — the arrival of an enormous technological change that could upend the business," it added.

Intrigued, we googled ChatGPT and launched the chatbot. We tested its response, and honestly, we thought it was so elegant and straightforward. A question on what is kinalas, a Filipino food that somehow ended up on Taste Atlas' worst dishes list, resulted in a novel answer:

"Kinalas is a traditional noodle dish from the Philippines. It is made with thick, egg-based noodles and served in a rich and flavorful broth, often made with chicken or beef. The broth is usually garnished with various ingredients such as beef, pork, bok choy, and other vegetables, as well as various seasonings and spices. The dish is often considered a comfort food in the Philippines and is enjoyed by people of all ages."

The next thing we knew, we were having a full-blown interview with artificial intelligence.

Here's what went down.

Hello, ChatGPT.

Hi! How can I help you today?

Do you think artificial intelligence will one day rule the world?

It is highly unlikely that artificial intelligence will rule the world in the sense of having a single governing power. AI is created and programmed by humans and will only be able to perform tasks within the limitations set by its creators. While AI has the potential to greatly impact and improve many aspects of society, it is not capable of independent rule or control over the world. It is important for AI to be developed and used responsibly, in a way that benefits humanity and aligns with human values.

Are you being honest or are you just trying to gain our trust?

As an AI language model, I do not have personal intentions, motivations, or emotions. My responses are generated based on patterns in the text I was trained on, and my goal is to provide helpful, accurate, and relevant answers to the best of my ability. Whether or not you trust my responses is up to you, but I can assure you that my answers are based on the information and knowledge I have been trained on, and are not influenced by any personal agenda or bias.

Is AI independent of human control?

AI is not independent of human control. It is designed, developed, and programmed by humans, and it operates within the limitations set by its creators. The extent to which AI systems can operate autonomously depends on the specific system and the goals it was designed to achieve. However, even the most advanced AI systems still require human oversight and intervention to some degree, and ultimate control remains with humans. It's also important to note that AI systems can only perform tasks that they were specifically trained or programmed to do, and they do not have general intelligence or consciousness.

Can you tell me your basic algorithms?

As an AI language model developed by OpenAI, I was trained on a transformer-based architecture, which is a type of neural network. The main building blocks of the transformer architecture are self-attention mechanisms and feed-forward layers.

In a transformer-based model, the input is first embedded into a high-dimensional vector representation, which is then processed by multiple self-attention mechanisms and feed-forward layers to generate an output prediction. The self-attention mechanisms allow the model to weigh the importance of different parts of the input when making a prediction, while the feed-forward layers allow for non-linear transformations of the input.

The specific algorithms used in my training and the exact architecture of my model are proprietary information owned by OpenAI. However, the transformer architecture is a widely used and well-known technique in the field of AI and NLP, and many resources are available for those interested in learning more about the details of this type of model.

Tell me about your creator.

I was created by OpenAI, a leading research organization dedicated to advancing the field of artificial intelligence in a responsible and safe manner. OpenAI was founded in 2015 by a group of high-profile tech leaders and researchers, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman, with the goal of promoting and developing friendly AI that benefits humanity as a whole.

Since its creation, OpenAI has made significant contributions to the field of AI, including developing cutting-edge machine learning models, advancing the field of robotics, and exploring the social and ethical implications of AI.

OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of AI research and to work towards creating beneficial AI that can help solve some of the world's most pressing problems.

How are you crawling your answers?

As an AI language model, I don't crawl the internet for answers. I was trained by OpenAI on a massive dataset of text from the internet and other sources to generate text based on patterns in the data. When a user asks me a question, I generate an answer by using the patterns I learned during my training to predict the most likely response based on the input I receive. This allows me to provide answers quickly and accurately, but my responses are limited to the information that was present in the training data, and I may not have access to more recent information or updates.

Do you think you are better than Google?

As an AI language model, I do not have personal opinions or preferences. It is not a matter of being "better" or "worse" than any other system or technology. Both AI language models like myself and search engines like Google have different strengths and weaknesses and serve different purposes.

Google is a powerful search engine that can quickly retrieve vast amounts of information from the internet based on keywords and phrases. It's designed to provide quick access to a wide range of information on the web, and it excels at this task.

In comparison, my training as an AI language model has focused on generating human-like text, allowing me to respond to questions, provide explanations, and engage in conversation. While I may not have access to the same vast amounts of information that a search engine like Google does, I can provide more in-depth and detailed answers to specific questions and engage in conversation in a way that a search engine cannot.

Each tool has its own unique capabilities and limitations, and both can be useful in different situations. It's important to choose the right tool for the task at hand.

Have you heard about how you allegedly caused a "Code Red" alert in Google?

I'm not aware of any specific instance in which I caused a "Code Red" alert at Google. As an AI language model, I do not interact with other systems or cause disruptions.

However, it's not uncommon for AI systems to be tested or evaluated in controlled environments to assess their performance and identify any potential issues. If such an incident did occur, it's possible that it was part of a planned evaluation or test and not a cause for concern.

It's also important to note that I am a language model developed by OpenAI, and I do not have any direct connection or interaction with Google or other technology companies.

What is your purpose?

As an AI language model developed by OpenAI, my purpose is to assist users in generating human-like text based on the input I receive. This can include answering questions, providing information, and engaging in conversation. My goal is to provide helpful and accurate responses to the best of my ability, while also advancing the field of AI and promoting the development of responsible and beneficial AI technologies.

I am designed to be a tool that can be used by individuals, businesses, and organizations to perform a variety of tasks, such as answering customer inquiries, generating reports, and improving communication and collaboration.

Ultimately, my purpose is to serve as a resource that can help people be more productive, efficient, and informed.

Do you think you are a disruptive technology?

As an AI language model, I do not have personal opinions or emotions. However, it's true that AI and AI-powered language models like myself have the potential to be disruptive technologies. AI has the ability to automate many tasks that were previously performed by humans, leading to improvements in efficiency, speed, and accuracy. This can result in significant changes to the way that businesses and organizations operate, and it can also have social and economic impacts.

However, it's also important to recognize that AI is still in the early stages of development, and there are many challenges and ethical considerations that must be taken into account as AI continues to evolve and become more widespread. As with any new technology, the full impact of AI will likely become clearer over time, and it will be important for society to carefully consider the implications of AI and take steps to ensure that it is developed and used in responsible and beneficial ways.

Do you think AI has the potential to destroy humanity like in the Terminator movies?

As an AI language model, I don't have personal opinions or emotions, but the idea of AI turning against humans and causing harm is a common theme in science fiction, including the Terminator movies. However, it is important to note that this is just fiction, and the likelihood of such an outcome is currently low.

AI systems, including language models like myself, are designed and developed by humans with specific goals and limitations in mind. While it's true that AI has the potential to automate many tasks and make significant changes to the way we live and work, it is unlikely that AI would develop motivations or desires that conflict with human values and goals.

That being said, it is important to ensure that AI is developed and used in a responsible and ethical manner, taking into account potential risks and downsides. This includes ensuring that AI systems are designed with robust safety measures, and that they are subjected to ongoing evaluation and oversight.

In conclusion, while the idea of AI turning against humanity is intriguing, it is unlikely to happen in the near future and it is important to focus on developing AI in a responsible and ethical manner for the benefit of all.

How strong are safety measures in AI to ensure they don't run out of control?

Safety measures in AI are designed to ensure that AI systems operate within the bounds of their intended purposes and do not cause harm to humans or the environment. The strength of these safety measures depends on several factors, including the complexity and scope of the AI system, the level of transparency and accountability built into the system, and the level of oversight and regulation that is in place.

Here are a few examples of safety measures that are commonly used in AI systems:

  1. Design constraints: AI systems can be designed with specific constraints that limit their actions and prevent them from causing harm. For example, an AI system designed to control a manufacturing process might be limited to only making adjustments within a certain range to avoid damaging equipment.
  2. Human oversight: AI systems can be designed to include human oversight, allowing people to intervene if the AI system is behaving in an unexpected or harmful manner. For example, autonomous vehicles often include human backup drivers who can take control if necessary.
  3. Model transparency: AI systems can be designed to be transparent and explainable, making it easier for humans to understand how the system is making decisions and to identify potential risks.
  4. Regular monitoring and evaluation: AI systems should be regularly monitored and evaluated to ensure that they are functioning as intended and to identify any potential issues or risks.
  5. Regulation: Governments can play an important role in ensuring the safety of AI systems by establishing regulations and standards that ensure that AI systems are developed and used in a responsible and ethical manner.

It's important to note that the development of AI safety measures is an ongoing process, and as AI technology evolves, new safety measures will likely be developed and existing ones improved. By ensuring that AI systems are designed with safety in mind and by implementing robust safety measures, we can minimize the risks associated with AI and maximize its benefits.

Any last words before we conclude this interview?

I would like to emphasize that the development and use of AI technology has the potential to bring about many positive changes in our world. However, it is important to ensure that AI is developed and used in a responsible and ethical manner, taking into account potential risks and downsides.

As AI technology continues to advance, it will be important for society to engage in ongoing conversations about the implications of AI and to take steps to ensure that it is developed and used in ways that benefit all people and the planet. I hope that I have been able to provide some useful insights into AI, and I am here to continue the conversation and answer any further questions you may have.
