PlayStation Mascots Spyro and Crash Could Soon Belong to Xbox
Two of PlayStation's most iconic mascots will soon become the property of rival gaming console Xbox, whose parent company, Microsoft, unveiled plans to buy Activision Blizzard Inc. for $68 billion—an unprecedented amount in Microsoft's history of acquisitions. To put things into perspective, Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for $4 billion, and the Star Wars franchise in 2012 for another $4 billion.Â
According to Bloomberg, the acquisition is Microsoft's biggest ever purchase, which would put the company in the number three spot in the world's biggest gaming companies. Activision is a giant game developer that owns many studios including Blizzard Entertainment, creator of hit titles such as Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. Activision is also the publisher of Call of Duty, and two of PlayStation's most iconic mascots: Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.Â
Crash and Spyro were two of PlayStation's mascots in the 1990s, much like how Mario represented Nintendo in its early days. However, both characters have been carried by different platforms, but it still feels strange for them to belong to a PlayStation rival.Â
In 2018, PlayStation unveiled Spyro: Reignited Trilogy for its PS4 console but was also carried by Nintendo Switch in 2019.Â
It is unclear what will become of all the titles in Activision once Microsoft's acquisition is complete, but it is likely to be carried by platforms that are already promoting the titles.Â
