This Tool Inspired by a Teacher's Post Can Help Online Math Classes
A social media post from a teacher who was having difficulties showing students how to solve math problems online inspired the invention of a device that helps them do just that.
The Mirror Board, which functions similar to a virtual whiteboard, helps teachers demonstrate their lessons during online classes. It was designed and manufactured by the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) Digihub Fablab and won third place at this year’s virtual Fabrication Festival, or Fabfest 4.
The designer, Jeremiah Bargio, who is a Science Research Assistant of DOST Region 11, said the Mirror Board is compatible with either desktop computers or laptops with built-in cameras. It works by bending the mirror down, which captures what is written on a paper placed over the table or keyboard, and then reflects the image back to the built-in camera in the monitor. The tool is easy to install and can be used with any online teaching platforms, including Zoom, Google Meet, MS Teams, and others.
In a news release, Bargio says his team was inspired by a post from a teacher who was using old compact discs (CDs) and pencils to show students how to solve a math problem. The Mirror Board offers a simple solution for this dilemma for teachers and instructors.
The Mirror Board was the entry of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Region 11 in the COVID-19 response innovation category of the Fabsiklaban Competition.
“We want to see more innovative projects in the coming days,” DTI 11 Regional Director Maria Belenda Q. Ambi said. “We encourage everyone, particularly those who have an innovative idea, to maximize our fablab here.”
Fabfest 4 was an event jointly organized by DTI Region 7 and the DOST Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen).
