Reggie Fils-Aimé has announced his retirement from his role as Nintendo of America’s president and COO. He’s become the face of Nintendo in the English-speaking world for the last 15 years, so it’s no surprise that his announcement sent shockwaves in the gaming community.

“For these past 15 years, I’ve been honored to be included as part of your family,” he said in a farewell message shared on Nintendo of America’s social media. “Just as you understand that Nintendo always tries to put smiles on faces, well, let me tell you, you put thousands of smiles on mine.”

But there’s a silver lining to the news. When he steps down on April 15, he’s going to be replaced by none other than Bowser.

That is, Doug Bowser, who has worked as Nintendo of America’s vice president of sales and marketing since 2015. He's been leading the marketing efforts for Nintendo's newest console, the Nintendo Switch.

We’re not saying Bowser's name, which is identical to the giant spiky-shelled villain of the Mario series, is the only reason why he’s becoming president, but come on. Even Fils-Aimé recognized it himself.

“With a name like Bowser, who better to hold the keys to the Nintendo castle?” he said in his farewell message.

Let’s just hope Nintendo’s competitors don’t hire someone named Mario anytime soon. But from the looks of this post back when Bowser was hired in 2015, it seems that he's ready to take them on.
